Duration: Full Year

Prerequisite: None. Students will need access to an instrument in class and at home. Instruments are available for rental from school. Inventory is limited.

Description: This is a full-year elective course, which focuses on the techniques, skills and musical experiences that are associated with a beginning-intermediate level course in instrumental music. Students may learn how to play a musical instrument for the first time or review previously learned musical skills by electing this course. The curriculum follows the Standard of Excellence Book 1 method book (Bruce Pearson). Through daily, scaffolded technical exercises and supplemental repertoire, students will learn to play their selected instrument while developing music literacy and associated ensemble skills through applied practice. This class will perform in one to two concerts toward the end of the school year. Proper performance attire required. Daily practice is expected.

Description: This is a full-year elective course which focuses on the techniques, skills, and musical experiences that are associated with an intermediate level course in instrumental music. Students who elect this course should have at least intermediate proficiency on their instrument. Students interested in playing percussion for this class must see the instructor for a placement audition. Curriculum is developed surrounding performance repertoire that meets the needs, strengths, and opportunities for growth to challenge students in the class. Through daily, scaffolded technical exercises and supplemental repertoire, students will improve on their instrument while continuing to develop music literacy and associated ensemble skills through applied practice. Performances will include school concerts. Proper performance attire required.

Prerequisite: Ability to play an instrument and to read music, Director approval.

Description: This is a full-year elective course which focuses on the techniques, skills, and musical experiences that are associated with an intermediate to advanced level course in instrumental music. Students who elect this course should have at least intermediate-advanced proficiency on their instrument. Students interested in playing percussion for this class must see the instructor for a placement audition. Curriculum is developed surrounding performance repertoire that meets the needs, strengths, and opportunities for growth to challenge students in the class. Through daily, scaffolded technical exercises and study of performance repertoire, students will improve on their instrument while continuing to develop music literacy and associated ensemble skills through applied practice. Performances will include playing at athletic events, concerts, and other school and community functions. The course is both Marching Band and Symphonic Band. Students are encouraged to audition for CMEA Regional Music Festival and CMEA All-State ensembles. A strong commitment to participating in public performances is expected of each class member. Proper performance attire required.

Description: This is a full-year elective course, which focuses on the techniques, skills and musical experiences that are associated with an intermediate level course in instrumental jazz. In addition, instruction in music of the jazz repertory and improvisation will be provided. Students who elect this course should have at least an intermediate to advanced proficiency on their instrument. Students interested in playing drum set, piano, or bass guitar for this class must see the instructor for a placement audition. A strong commitment to participating in public performances is expected of each class member. Proper performance attire required.
