HOW TO BECOME A 2019-2020 VOLUNTEER

PHASE ONE: REGISTRATION

  1. Register to be an official 2019-20 NHI volunteer.
    1. Go to https://www.nationalhispanicinstitute.org/forms/volunteer/
    2. Log in to your NHI account and select “Apply to Volunteer”
  2. If you are currently a sophomore (10th grade), you MUST be registered for the LDZ and if you are a junior (11th grade), you MUST be registered for the CWS. NOTE: For seniors (12th grade) or college students, you may be asked to fill out Background Check information.
  3. Read, review, and upload a signed 2019-20 Volunteer Registration Form to your NHI Online Volunteer Account. You can download it at --- (Click here to download) and email it to volunteer@nhimail.com or fax it to 512-357-2206. If you are under 18 years old, you will need your parent/guardian to sign.

PHASE TWO: RECRUITMENT AND SERVICE (AUGUST - OCTOBER)

  1. You must participate in the 2019-20 NHI Outreach and Recruitment Campaign. In order to be eligible, you must recruit and enroll at least three (3) new students to the program you want to staff. This means the applicant MUST provide a complete application with a $20 app fee and report card, as well as add your name to the “Recruited By” or “Nominated By” section of the application. Incomplete applications will not be counted. We strongly encourage you to keep names, phone numbers, and emails to follow up with all your applicants.
  2. If you want to staff the Great Debate, 4-day or 6-day, and you want to be considered eligible for a possible position at a tournament, you must recruit and enroll at least three (3) 2020 Great Debaters. This means they submit their application, a report card declaring 3.0/85% GPA or better, and $20 application fee.
  3. If you want to staff the LDZ and want to be considered eligible for a position, you must recruit and enroll at least three 2020 LDZers. This means they submit their application, a report card declaring 3.2/88% GPA or better, and $20 application fee. Recruiting a Great Debater WILL NOT be accepted as a new recruit.
  4. If you want to serve as an Umpire at the CWS and want to be considered eligible for a position, you must recruit and enroll at least three 2020 CWSers. This means they submit their application, a report card declaring 3.2/88% GPA or better, and $20 application fee. For a list of eligible names to recruit, please contact cws@nhimail.com.
  5. If you do not have access to a lot of eligible students, come from a small school community or small town, you can help with follow up, welcome, or interest calls. These will be assigned and credited. NHI HQ will also award letters indicating hours of community service.
  6. Work with NHI HQ and Alliances/Project Administrators to participate and attend local and regional outreach and recruitment events, meetings, and presentations, as well as meet local participation requirements.
  7. Make sure that applicants put your name down in the section "Recruited By" or "Nominated By" so that NHI can track your progress.

PHASE THREE: PLACEMENT AND CONFIRMATION (DECEMBER)

  1. Annually take and pass the NHI required training courses (specific host institutions might require a different Sexual Abuse Prevention, Sexual Harassment Prevention, and/or Anti-Hazing Training) and submit a copy of the completion certificate;
  2. Pass an official NHI home office led background check (if 18 or older or turning 18 by summer program;
  3. Submit NHI Medical and Parent Release Forms (for members under 18 years old); and
  4. If selected for a role, submit confirmed travel information to and from the program site.
