Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) aims to help students develop greater self-directedness and independence in their learning. In SIL, students are invited to go on a learning adventure by either exploring a topic of their choice, or selecting from a list of thought-provoking issues suggested by the teachers. With minimal guidance from the teachers, students plan how they would go about gathering information about their chosen topic, how they would process that information and how they would demonstrate and share their learning at the conclusion of their learning adventure. The topics they choose involve out-of-curriculum exploration, from fields as diverse as picking up a foreign language (e.g. basic Korean) to creating artwork using mathematical equations. Through SIL, students can hone skills and dispositions that will enable them to learn for life.
