WHY TEACH THEATRE ARTS?
Sharon Dellinger
President Obama once said, "The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." A Chinese Proverb also says tell me and I will forget, show me and I will remember, involve me and I will understand. Theatre Arts is important to creativity and problem solving. It allows for communication, self-discipline, collaboration and cooperation.
In Theatre Arts Enhancement classes 4th and 5th graders had the opportunity to perform a book to the lower grades. They worked together in groups to create a play from a well-known book. Third graders learned about the planets and acted out the “Planet Song for Kids” and now are learning about inference skills using scenarios and text. Second and third graders had the opportunity to learn about the musical Junie B. Jones before going to see it at Thalian Association Community Theatre. We were fortunate to have three of our Snipes Academy students on the stage! Second graders have been working on fables and retelling fables with puppets. Kindergarten and first graders have learned to use puppets and are preparing for their performance on March 23. It will be a Dr. Seuss parody called Purple Eggs and Spam Students are creative and always engaged in theatre arts class.
Theatre Performance group performed at our Christmas Program with A Pirate's Christmas. They are currently working on The Jungle Book Kids which will be performed on May 29 and May 30. You don’t want to miss this show, it will be a sock knocker! No art form is truly more collaborative than Theatre Arts. It is an important tool for preparing students to live and work in the real world.
