Mr. Hinson has been teaching band at Williston Middle School for the past six years. For the last three years, he has also been involved with the NHHS Marching Wildcats, bringing 7th- and 8th-grade students from Williston to perform at football games. A firm believer in the positive impact of the arts on students’ lives, Mr. Hinson is excited to begin this new opportunity to work directly with NHHS!
Ms. Hannah James has been teaching choir and music appreciation at NHHS for the past eight years. She has a background in both band and chorus and plans to capitalize on the parts of music that are consistent across disciplines. Ms. James has played tuba throughout high school and college and has held a variety of leadership positions in band organizations during that time. Ms. James believes that band can open up a whole new world for students and wants everyone to enjoy their time as they grow.
This course emphasizes basic musicianship and performance techniques on individual woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students concentrate on developing techniques such as breath control, tone quality, range, and proper posture. Students participate in small and large ensembles in which quality traditional and contemporary literature reinforce important musical concepts. Members are required to attend all band performances unless cleared by the director. In the event that a performance is missed an assignment will be required as a makeup. Marching band is co-curricular and students in class are required to participate in marching band and attend all performances for a major grade.
