Recorder Karate
All students are issued a personal recorder during their 4th grade year. This is the first wind instrument that our students learn to play! We will use Recorder Karate, a comprehensive unit in which students can apply their understanding of appropriate rhythms (whole, half, quarter, duple and single eighth, and dotted), key signatures F and C, and time signatures 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. More importantly, they learn playing technique and proper etiquette for group and independent practice.
You will notice that songs include a box which contains new information as songs become increasingly challenging. Students can only "pass" a belt test with 2 or less mistakes, but may re-try as they continue their independent practice. One can only advance once they have passed the previous belt test.
