Math 1

NHCS Math 1 - Middle School

Students taking high school courses in middle school are expected to demonstrate a work ethic consistent with the rigorous demands of taking an upper level course.  All students taking NC Math 1 in middle school will be required to take the NC Math 1 End-of-Course test. Though they will not be taking the Math 8 End-of-Grade test,  they will be still be learning eighth grade standards in addition to the NC Math 1 standards.  Students taking NC Math 1 in eighth grade will experience a greater level of rigor which will require a higher level of cognitive demand and organization.

NC Math 1 is a North Carolina High School Exit Standard course.  To meet the exit standard and receive high school graduation credit for taking Math 1 in middle school, students must successfully pass the course and take the Math 1 End-of-Course test.  The End-of-Course test will count as 20% of the final grade. Keep in mind, the final grade will not be calculated in the student’s high school grade point average.  Upon meeting the exit standard, students will receive one unit of credit for high school mathematics.

Your child must meet graduation requirements outlined in the Future Ready Core Course of Study which requires all students to have four units of mathematics including NC Math 1, NC Math 2, NC Math 3, and a course with NC Math 3 as a prerequisite.  While this course does count as one of the four required math courses, it is advisable that students take an honors or advanced placement level mathematics course during their senior year.

During the third week of school, the performance of each student will be evaluated to determine if the student should continue in NC Math 1.   If Math 1 is not the best placement for your child, the  sooner the change is made to Math 8, the better. All students enrolled in NC Math 1 after the 20th day of school are required to take the NC Math 1 End-of-Course test.
