Tips for Preparing and Doing Well
Review the EOC flashcards on Google Classroom and take in-class review seriously.
Get a good night's rest the night before the exam.
Eat a good breakfast the day of the test.
Dress comfortably and in layers--the room may be hot or cold.
Bring your CHARGED laptop and your charger. Shut down your computer the night before so that it can make any needed updates.
Be on time--rushing to get to school/class on time will increase your anxiety before the test.
During the Test
Take your time and manage your time--you have a maximum of 4 hours to complete the test. You cannot leave or have your phone when you finish, so there's no need to rush. DO NOT distract others once you finish.
Read the passages fully and read ALL answer choices before choosing the best answer.
Use process of elimination.
Know your why--WHY do you think the answer is correct? What evidence from the text supports your answer?
Flag questions that you are unsure of, but go ahead and choose an answer. When you finish all sections, go back to your flagged questions (there will be a chart at the end that indicates which questions you flagged) and reread the questions/passages; choose your final answer.
You can skip around as much as you want. It can help to save passages that feel difficult for you due to genre, topic, etc. for last and complete those you feel more confident about first.
Repeat positive affirmations if you feel anxious. Don't allow negative thoughts to spiral.
Use the stretch breaks to stretch!
If you feel sleepy, pull down on your ear lobes; it's a natural pressure point that will help your body stay awake.
English II EOC Short Constructed Responses and Rubrics
There will be 3-4 short Constructed Responses on the EOC.
They are worth anywhere from 10-20% of your overall EOC Score.
Even though the directions will state that you can use bullet points, I strongly recommend that you use complete sentences to avoid errors.
Make sure to focus on the question asked and address all items in the question.
For example, if the question asks how the author's use of rhetorical devices enhances the theme, you need to state what the theme is AND provide specific examples from the text of rhetorical devices that enhance the theme.
Do not simply say, "He uses similes to..." Specifically reference the simile used by quoting material from the text. You MUST include textual evidence to receive credit. Check for mistakes (capitalization, punctuation, subject/verb agreement, correct usage, etc.) before submitting the test.
Use the RACES model:
Restate and Answer the question. Restate the prompt and make a claim--use the words and phrases provided in the prompt in your answer.
Cite evidence from the text (provide 1-2 strong examples from the text that support your analysis).
Explain how the text evidence supports your answer. Use words from your topic sentence/the question in your explanations to connect the evidence to your answer.
Your answer does not need to be a full essay, but a strong response will likely be at least 4-6 sentences in length.
You MUST cite evidence from the text (2 examples if possible!) to support your answer.
Do not rush when typing your Constructed Responses. Although there are only 3-4, they are a significant percentage of the overall grade of the exam. MAKE SURE TO PROOFREAD.
There is a 1,000 character (not word) limit on the constructed response questions. Be as concise as possible while still giving a thorough answer.
