5th Grade SCIENCE

Welcome 5th grade scientists and family members! A 5th grader will take 3 science "check-ins" or benchmarks and an End of Grade (EOG) assessment this year.

Each NC Check-In will represent a specific unit in science, Earth, Physical, and Life science. The EOG will be a combination of all science units. In their EOGs students should expect to see different types and forms of questions. Learning and experiencing in the world of science is not to be based in testing. However, with testing as a part of our 5th grade year this page is meant to inform and help build confidence as we strengthen our understanding and abilities.

North Carolina EOG Unit Breakdown

Operational Items of a NC 5th Grade Science EOGs are multiple choice (select the best answer), and technology-enhanced (move, drag and drop your answer) questions. The 8 Field Test items will not count against a student. They are there to collect data for future assessments and understanding.

There are two formats of questions. Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) are focused questions that assess a student's understanding of the content. Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) apply a student's understanding often times giving a scenario that a student analyzes and extends comprehension on a topic in multiple questions.

The 3 major units of elementary science are represented in EOG percentages below. Every unit of science counts, however the "higher" percentage areas are Life and Physical Science.

North Carolina Check-In Breakdown

North Carolina 5th Grade science students have 3 "Check-Ins" or benchmarks that focus on specific standards in the science units taught. These Check-Ins allow students and educators to collect valuable data to help student understanding in skills. It also gives practice on testing type questions. Teachers use the information from these assessments to help adjust instruction to support the learner in their needs. Assessments A, B, C are given throughout the year as a baseline during or at the end of instruction of standards taught.
