Ms. Argent's 6th Grade Math

Weekly Math Messages

Week of December 4th:

We will continue to work on percents this week. Last week we concentrated on converting between percents, fractions, and decimals. This week we will begin solving problems using percent. For example, "12 is what percent of 156?" The students have three IXL assignments to complete this week. THANK YOU so much for the families who sent in pencils. They are much appreciated!

Week of November 27th

I hope everyone had a wonderful few days off! I'm looking forward to seeing the students tomorrow and beginning percents this week. The students will have two new IXL assignments to complete. On Thursday, all of the sixth grade math teachers will be attending a professional development, so there will be a substitute. Also, if you have any extra pencils or pencil sharpeners laying around your home that you would like to donate, please feel free to. Our two electric pencil sharpeners do not work very well and our pencil supply is rapidly depleting!

Week of November 20th

I am SO pleased with the effort the students put into their benchmarks assessments. This week we will be reviewing the benchmark assessments and completing an escape room on unit rates. Next week, we begin percentages.

There will be no school for students from Wed, Nov. 22- Fri, Nov. 24. Enjoy the break! I look forward to seeing everyone back on Mon, Nov 27.

Week of November 13th

This week we'll be reviewing for the math benchmark assessment on Thursday. It will cover everything we have covered this year: prime/composite numbers, LCM & GCF, area of a triangle, parallelogram , trapezoid & compound shapes, surface area & nets, and ratios & rates. I will be assigning specific lessons on IXL for the students to review these topics. Please encourage your child to work on IXL every evening. Thank you for all your support and please let me know if you have any questions!

Week of October 31st

Happy Monday! Today is the LAST day of our 1st quarter. Report Cards will come home on Friday, Nov. 3. There is NO SCHOOL for students tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 31st. On Wednesday we will begin rates. If you take your child with you to the store, show them the unit rates on the prices (ex. cost per ounce vs overall cost) Thank you for continuing to encourage the IXL. It is also an app that can be downloaded to a phone. I can already see a difference in the student who are putting in the effort!

Week of October 23rd

This will be our final week working on equivalent ratios, ratio tables, and comparing multiple ratio tables. We will complete a study guide over the next few days to prepare for the Unit 2 assessment on Friday. Next week, we will begin rates and percentages, so having a strong understanding of ratios is essential!

Please make sure your child has pencils. They run through them very quickly!

Congrats to Nathan, Alan, Marcus, and Theo as our first IXL leaders for last week. A new leaderboard begins each week. 15 minutes of daily practice will REALLY help your child!

Week of October 16th:

This week we will continue working on equivalent ratios. We will also add analyzing ratio tables and comparing multiple ratio tables.  Our weekly mastery check will be on Friday, as always!

This week I will also begin to keep a leaderboard regarding IXL.  IXL is an online math program that meets your student's individual needs, as well as allowing me to assign specific skills to work on. I do not assign homework, so this is optional, but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND your student working on this for 10-15 minutes daily.  It will allow your child to academically grow by building a stronger math foundation and focusing on needed skills.

The IXL leaderboard should provide some fun weekly and yearly awards for the students. All students have laptops that go home every evening, but please let me know if your child does not have internet access at home , so I can provide an alternative assignment.
