Hey Everyone!
My name is Jeffrey Sean Stanek. I was born in Petersburg, Virginia and went to C.C. Wells Elementary and Carver Middle School until eighth grade. Beginning my educational journey outside of Richmond played a major role in how my love for history developed. I remember reading stories in my textbooks and picturing what it would have been like to live in the past but that isn’t what got me hooked. While on field trips with my classes and teachers, I became immersed in the history of a location. By walking in the same buildings and environments, I could see where the people that I had read about lived, and I could breathe in all of the smells that they once did. This made me feel like I was part of what happened long ago. Going to Williamsburg, Jamestown, Monticello, and Mount Vernon shaped who I am today, both as an individual and an educator. During eighth grade, I moved to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where I finished middle school and attended high school. I received a scholarship to attend Coastal Carolina University, and I capitalized on that opportunity.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Education specializing in Social Studies and English Language Arts. In my senior year, I completed my field experience at Loris Middle School where I taught eighth grade Social Studies under the guidance of my cooperating teacher for a semester. Upon completion of my student teaching and graduation, I was offered a position at Loris Middle School to teach eighth grade Social Studies. I taught eighth grade Social Studies there for seven years, until the end of the school year in 2021. Then, I moved to Wilmington, North Carolina when my fiancée began her journey toward a doctoral degree in Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Upon moving, I was hired by New Hanover County Schools and began teaching at Holly Shelter Middle School. My first year at Holly Shelter was a learning experience for me as I was placed in sixth grade and had a brand new curriculum to learn, Ancient Civilizations. This change forced me out of my comfort zone that is US History, and I learned a great deal about this period of history as well as how different sixth grade students are compared to eighth. The next school year, I was moved to eighth grade where I once again had the opportunity to teach my favorite content, US History. I have been teaching eighth grade Social Studies at Holly Shelter since then.
