Class overview
8th Grade Social Studies will integrate United States history with the study of North Carolina history. The major focus of this course is North Carolina state history with the integration of local and national history. This integrated study helps students understand and appreciate the legacy of our democratic republic and to develop the skills needed to engage responsibly and intelligently as North Carolinians. Students in eighth grade will continue to build on the fourth and fifth-grade introductions to North Carolina and the United States by embarking on a more rigorous study of the historical foundations and democratic principles that continue to shape our state and nation. Students will begin with a review of the major ideas, events, and cultures preceding the foundation of North Carolina and the United States. The main focus of the course will be how students use inquiry to examine critical events, people, issues, and developments in the state and nation from the Colonial Era to contemporary times. Students will understand the relationship of geography, events, and people to the political, economic, technological, and cultural developments that shaped our existence in North Carolina and the United States over time.

About me...
I am excited to start my 15th year in education. This will be my second year at MCS Noble Middle School teaching 8th Grade Social Studies.
My lovely wife and best friend, Mary Jane, and I, will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary next year. We have two sons, Jarrett (30) and Andrew (28.) Andrew has an intellectual disability but is high functioning. He works at Publix in Ogden as a courtesy clerk. He loves people and loves for my students and their families to introduce themselves. We also have a small dog, Harley, she is a Cotton de Tulear. (She used to be my dog, until my wife started working at home full time.)
In my spare time I like to hunt, fish and work in the yard. We also have a camper 5th wheel and love to travel in our spare time
I have a very diverse background. I worked in the corporate world for 22 years. After leaving the corporate world, my wife and I opened two furniture stores after Hurricane Andrew in Miami. I fished professionally for many years and after moving from Florida to Texas, decided to devote my career to education. Fun facts... I am also an ordained minister and a U.S.C.G Licensed Captain. We also volunteer and participate in the Special Olympics Delegation of North Carolina.
I bring a lifetime of experiences into the classroom that I enjoy sharing with my students to make their learning meaningful!
