The NC Compulsory Attendance Law (G.S. 115C-378) states every parent, guardian, or other person in North Carolina having charge or control of a child between the ages of seven and 16 years of age shall cause that child to attend school continuously for a period equal to the time which the public school to which the child is assigned is in session. It prohibits any person from encouraging, enticing, or counseling the child to be unlawfully absent from school.
The parent, guardian or custodian of the child is required to notify the school of the reason(s) for each known absence of the child, in accordance with local school policy.
Absences
If your child must be absent, you must send in a note or email your child's homeroom teacher or email Ms. Hyman the day your child returns to school stating the dates of the absences, the specific reason, and your signature. The NC Compulsory Attendance Law requires that absences be recorded as excused or unexcused. You will be notified when your child has 3,6, and 10 unexcused absences. The social worker may contact you to determine if there are any issues which are preventing your child from attending school and can offer assistance if necessary. If your child accumulates excessive (10 or more) unexcused absences, a referral may be made to the Judicial Attendance Council.
