I am so excited to teach you this semester. Freshman year is such a wonderful time of growth, and it is so important for me to make sure you all have the opportunity to put your best foot forward to start off your high school career. This will help outline my expectations and provide important information that you and your parents may need to reference during the semester in order to help you be successful.
This semester we will have opportunities for collaborative learning, discussion, and feedback. We will be working with the MyPerspectives Curriculum and completing the following units:
Unit 1 - Power of Words
How can words inspire change? (Non-fiction review)
Rhetoric/Diction in Non-Fiction texts
Review Fiction/Narrative
WRITING FOCUS: Citing reliable sources and informative writing (RACES); Telling a story (Narrative)
Unit 2 - SURVIVAL
What does it take to survive?
Lord of the Flies Unit
WRITING FOCUS: Argument Writing
Unit 3- DESTINY vs FATE
Do we determine our own destinies?
Mini-unit Romeo and Juliet
WRITING FOCUS: Writing to compare
Unit 4 - DYSTOPIA
Why do we try to imagine the future?
Fahrenheit 451/Ray Bradbury Short Stories Unit
WRITING FOCUS: Review - student choice (Argument, Informative, Narrative)
Semester Enrichment Project - The Odyssey - information provided the first week of class
I do recommend students purchase a copy of Lord of the Flies and Fahrenheit 451 so that they can annotate the text. This helps build their critical thinking and analysis skills. These are not required but recommended. Class sets will be available for students to read in class.
HOMEWORK: All classwork needs to be done IN CLASS. The only homework will be READING the chapter or text for the next day. **NOTE** This may also include occasional Commonlits, Edpuzzles, or Canvas Digital annotations. All homework is DUE at the START of the following class. A 60 is the highest grade possible on late homework.
All WRITING must be done in class.*
*The goal is that all work be completed during classtime, but occasionally students may need more time to finish an assignment if they do not finish. This can be requested when needed and will be allowed when students have demonstrated that they were working and on task and just need a little more time. If it is a writing assignment, students need to have a parent or guardian sign the assignment that they completed it on their own without the assistance of technology. This includes students making up work after being absent (see policy below).

EXTENSIONS
All work is expected to be completed IN CLASS. However, I understand that “life happens” and there will be times a student needs extra time to complete an assignment. Students who need extra time to complete classwork can attend a work session Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:45-8:15am OR if needed, complete it at home. For written assignments, they will need to have a parent sign that they did the work on their own without the use of outside technology
Grading Policies:
When Absent
Write the dates you were out on your packet and mark it “ABSENT.”
It’s the student's responsibility to check Canvas and see what you missed.
Students have 3 school days for each day you were absent to get the work completed adn turned-in.
Late Work Policy
You can turn in late work up to one week after the due date. After that, the highest grade you can earn is a 50 for completed work. Missing work will receive a 0.
I’ll let you know the final cut-off dates in class.
Anything missing at interim reports stays a 0. The final deadline for late work after interim reports is 3 school days before the end of the quarter. After that, no late work will be accepted and will remian a 0.
Exceptions:
Some homework assignments (like CommonLit, Edpuzzle, or Canvas Annotations) are due the next day before class starts. If you turn these in late, the highest grade you can get is a 50.

Another key element to success in high school that I hope to begin to foster in students is the ability to communicate your needs to your teachers. This is not at all discouraging parent communication when you have questions or concerns, but for straightforward issues (missed a test, questions about an assignment/grade, requests for redos or further feedback) students should work on becoming their own advocates throughout the course of the year. Email is the best way to communicate with me.
