MISSION AND PURPOSE OF NHCS Career and Technical Education
The mission of Career-Technical Education is to empower students with skills and knowledge needed for effective participation in a global economy as world-class workers, productive citizens and contributors to Society. Students develop the ability to work independently and as part of a team, think creatively to solve problems, and utilize technology in the problem solving process. CTE concentrators are career and college ready with 21st century skills. The Career and Technical Education Curriculum promotes best practices, integration of language arts, math and technology.
NHCS CTE Programs and Course Offerings
There are over 45 Career & Technical Education courses offered at Laney High School, not including courses like automotive technology or electrical trades; which are courses that can be taken at other New Hanover County High Schools through concurrent enrollment. There are additional courses that are not offered at the high school level, but can be taken at the CFCC campuses. Courses like Welding, Criminal Justice and Cosmetology are open to any high school student (if they meet entrance requirements). For a complete list, please view the NHCS Curriculum Guide.
Special Populations
Within the student body, many individuals have needs that go beyond needing a pair of corrective glasses to see the board in front of the room or gaining access to modified curriculum. The special populations coordinator serves as an advocate for students with special needs in the Career & Technical Education classroom. The coordinator helps students with over all course and testing accommodations and modifications on exams and classroom work. In addition to helping the student be successful, the coordinator assists the teacher in making sure they have curriculum resources needed to teach.
