About the Teacher

Isaac Bear Early College High School

English Teacher

Hello and welcome to my teacher  webpage!

I have been a licensed teacher in New Hanover County for the past 23 years.   After completing an internship at New Hanover High School in the spring of 2000, I accepted a full time position for the following school year. Over the years, I wore many hats in and out of the traditional classroom at New Hanover: I taught in the Lyceum Academy for 7 years where I traveled extensively with students and developed collaborative lessons with a team of teachers; I was part of the first AVID teaching team and eventually became STAE certified which also allowed me to integrate English curriculum and team teach; I taught Advanced Placement English for 15 years; and, I guided a class of students through Graduation Research Projects almost every year between 2000 and 2020.   In  addition to my classroom teaching experiences, I have served as department chair, played a role in a variety of student support teams, participated in school improvement plans, collaborated in developing student and teacher affinity groups, and provided continued education/support for my colleagues. As for my own education, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1996, I became a certified North Carolina teacher in 2000, I became a National Boards Certified Teacher in 2006, and I earned a Master of Secondary Education degree in 2008.  In 2016, I also became dual certified to teach K-12 English as a Second Language, and I am slowly working  on another degree, as well as license, in K-12 Language and Literacy Specialist area.  In 2018, I  joined the team at Isaac Bear Early College High School and was named Teacher of the Year for 2020. Each new year, I look forward to teaching, learning, and growing with my colleagues, students, and community.

On this web-page, you will find a tab (in the upper right hand corner) for your class. Your class page includes announcements, a current syllabus, and additional links for grammar/writing tips.  In addition, students will need to access my NHCS Canvas course daily in order to obtain any assignments/classwork. A variety of assignments will be submitted online; however, please note that a multitude of assignments will also require paper copies and/or outside online program access.  I encourage parents/guardians to also access Canvas throughout the year to see what students are reading, discussing, writing, and creating week by week in class and how various assignments should be submitted.

Lastly, please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have at any point throughout the year.
