Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization created in 1983 by Dr. Gerard J. Putz and Jack Cairns. The goal of the organization is to increase interest in science. Science Olympiad competitions run like a track meet, consisting of 23 events in both Division B (middle school) and Division C (highschool). Every year events are rotated through to refelct the changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, etc.
The competition emphasizes hands-on, teamwork to work toward a shared goal. Science Olympiad provides students with the opportunity to meet and interact with other peers and adults of different interests and talents.
Keystone Academy's Science Olympiad Team started during the 2024-2025 school year. The team has competed in a variety of practice invitationals to prepare for the Michigan Science Olympiad Region 8 Tournament. In years past, the team has placed 5th overall at Regionals and has been awarded Gold Bids while doing exceptionally well in specific events.
One of the great things about Science Olympiad is students getting involved as well as making connections with each other! Team members learn to collaborate across grade levels to be successful and have fun.
