The NGL Mycelium Experiment
a multi-local web subverting normative resource flow patterns
a multi-local web subverting normative resource flow patterns
To create material structures, rooted in our physical being together, that subvert normative resource flow patterns as we nurse our individual and collective liberation and raise capacity to surround the patriarchal field with love.
Trust in life as moving toward flow, togetherness, and choice with all we have and know to do and entrusting the outcome to the mystery of how life unfolds
Humility as surrendering to the limitations of our individual and collective capacity, opening to the unknown without forcing anything
Courage as choosing to take action that risks our significance, in alignment with purpose and within care for the whole, even when we are in the grip of patriarchal conditioning
Truth as rigorously integrating new information about needs, impacts, and resources, embracing every bit of experimentation, even when it brings discomfort, as a pathway of liberation that realigns us with life at all levels
Love as opening our hearts to everyone’s mattering, leaning into togetherness, orienting to full giving and receiving, and drawing from shared purpose in times of conflict
Leadership as an orientation of serving life, bringing tenderness to engaging with power differences, and coalescing our collective capacity

Mycelium root systems form a web of interconnected elements that moves through the unseen world. It connects with other elements, playing an important role in breaking down and making available different nutrients, and enabling information to flow so resources can move in support of collective thriving. We believe that the Mycelium way is the organic way of being for humans, too.
Our current capitalist-patriarchal system, in particular, changed this system. It re-channels resources to a few, in places where resources already exist, rather than to the many, and in doing so disrupts the balance that supports overall thriving. Because capitalism requires “man power” to fuel it, it focuses resources primarily on people that are of “productive” age so that the system supports best those who can contribute to continuing the system. This structure encourages separation and competition between people, and draws resources away from where there is other need. Systemically, this particularly affects women who are child-bearing, mothers, and those, particularly women, who are older.
The mycelium experiment is tangibly taking steps towards a world where all needs are held with care and so is experimenting with turning this normative resource flow pattern on its head.
Experimenting and expanding into ways of functioning that embed needs-based resource flow takes a tonne of energy. Even while this site is incomplete and may be a bit confusing and/or chaotic, we invite you to courageously step into the chaos with us and contribute your energy to moving what we are doing forwards in ways that we believe will support us by getting involved below.
“Mycelium” refers to the interdependent intelligence of fungus; the mycelium web’s gradual expansion outwards within what’s possible together, and the information and nutrients that travels across the web in support of collective thriving.
Experiment refers to our collective commitment to experiment with our lives, to be the experimenters and the experimented-on, in material ways for the realisation of this vision.
The Mycelium experiment is made up primarily of NGL’ers who have been following and co-holding the journey of the Mycelium Experiment Pod 1 (MEP1) (Eddy, Emma, & Miki) since Autumn 2021. Though the project is not “about” the pod, it centres around taking on and further experimenting with their experiments, bringing them to life in wider and wider circles and deepening them through further experimenting.
The forms the project is currently taking are:
Creating the optimal conditions for the pod to be able to do “ceiling work” and for Miki to be able to engage her life’s work from within connection to her organic flow, while also supporting resources to flow in such a way that will support Yaren to maintain connection with her purpose-based passions while she becomes a mother.
Engaging in systems design and experimentation in the context of living together
Designing and holding twice yearly gatherings, focussing on deepening interdependence
Experimenting with Adult-Child integration towards a community of all ages
You are welcome to get involved with the Mycelium Experiment, at present, by filling out the capacity assessment form to see whether and how you are a fit for supporting with the Miki-Yaren experiment. Go here to read more and engage with the capacity assessment form.
