This workshop will explore foundational components of Self-Compassion in Practice, a special Heart of Parenting series. While I plan to touch on many themes and practices together, the direction of the session will also be shaped by what emerges within the space itself. Drawing from previous workshops, it’s easy to imagine participants coming away with several grounded practices and perspectives to continue exploring in daily life and relationships.
Many of us carry an inner voice that criticizes, pressures, compares, or tells us we are not doing enough. While this voice can become especially loud in parenting and caregiving, it also shapes how we relate to partners, family, friendships, community, and ourselves.
Rather than trying to silence or fight the inner critic, we will gently explore how this voice, beneath its harshness, may be attempting to protect, guide, or help us meet important needs.
Through guided inquiry, mindful reflection, and self-compassion practices, participants will be invited to soften cycles of reactivity, perfectionism, people-pleaseing and overwhelm, and reactivity while cultivating greater presence, connection, and choice in their relationships with themselves and their children.
You are invited to bring a moment, pattern, or inner voice that tends to arise in your parenting or other relationships, including with yourself.
Heather Austin was introduced to, and fell in love with, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) through Inbal Kashtan’s book, “Parenting From Your Heart” and she is deeply grateful to have been working closely, learning, and experimenting with Inbal’s sisters, Arnina and Miki, for over eight years as a founding member of the Nonviolent Global Liberation (NGL) Community and The Compass Program Coordinator, Coach and Facilitator.
Heather‘s passion is to support parents and children in cultivating their capacity for nonjudgemental present moment awareness; deepening their connection with themselves and one another; and co-creating compassionate, purpose-aligned, collaborative family systems, in the hope that these family systems will serve as seeds for creating a world that works for all. She has been doing this with the consciousness and practical tools that are part of her learnings from NVC, NGL, The Compass, UCLA's Adaptive Schools & Parent Empowerment Training, Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems, Polyvagal Theory, and more.
In addition to her work with the Kashtan sisters, Heather facilitates parenting classes and groups, and offers individual support sessions including home and school visits. She brings wisdom from her decades-long journey of teaching parents and children of all ages, in and out of school settings, in the U.S., Mexico and across Europe, as well as from her own journey of parenting and homeschooling her neurodivergent child.
