Empowering ākonga to achieve success and fulfilment, for themselves, whānau and community
Tēnā koutou. Nau mai haere mai. Nau mai hoki mai.
Welcome to whānau returning to Napier Girls' High School. Welcome to whānau commencing your journey with us. Welcome all.
I trust that you have had a wonderful summer break and have had some lovely weather at some stage!
It has been wonderful this week welcoming ākonga back to school. As we commence this new academic year, we do so by celebrating our ākonga academic success in their 2024 examinations (provisional results in this newsletter). Congratulations to all on such a great outcome. Given the changes to NCEA Level 1 and the introduction of literacy and numeracy assessments, these results are fantastic! We applaud the accomplishments of our ākonga and wish them all the very best for this year. Ka mau te wehi!
Thank you to whānau for the support of your rangatahi, but also thank you to kaiako for their enormous contribution in ensuring the success of our ākonga in what was a challenging time.

As we start the 2025 school year, we are thrilled to share with you the theme that will guide our journey over the next 12 months:
Mā ngā huruhuru, ka rere te manu – It is the feathers that enable the bird to fly
For our kura and our kaupapa of empowering ākonga to achieve success and fulfilment for themselves, their whānau, and the community, this whakataukī highlights the importance of collective efforts, nurturing, and collaboration.
The Feathers (Huruhuru): The Key Elements of Support
Teachers and staff: who provide the knowledge, mentorship, opportunities and encouragement to guide ākonga on their learning journey.
Whānau: who contribute through their aroha, involvement, and cultural values, grounding students in their identity.
Community connections: partnerships with local organisations, iwi, and alumni who provide opportunities and resources to extend learning beyond the classroom.
The Bird in Flight: Empowering Ākonga
Personal achievement: helping each student recognise and achieve their unique potential, whether through academic excellence, sports, arts, or cultural pursuits.
Cultural pride: embracing and integrating Mātauranga Māori and kaupapa Māori to ensure ākonga feel empowered in their identity.
Community impact: encouraging students to give back and contribute to their community, carrying the values instilled at Napier Girls’ High School into the world.
To bring the whakataukī to life we will be focusing on:
Providing tools for success (Kairangi Whaiaro - our value of Personal Excellence):
Ensuring access to high-quality teaching, resources, and extracurricular activities.
Building strong relationships (Whānaungatanga - our value of Relationships & Connections):
Strengthening the partnership between NGHS and whānau through regular communication, shared goals, and cultural inclusivity.
Supporting students to create lasting connections within their peer groups and the wider community.
Uplifting all students (Manaakitanga - our value of Respect & Caring):
Celebrating achievements across all areas, ensuring success is defined holistically.
Prioritising well-being, resilience, and hauora as part of the curriculum.
Modeling Empowerment:
Showcasing role models, like our Old Girls' and inspiring leaders, to highlight the pathways that ākonga can follow.
This whakataukī is a beautiful metaphor for the role NGHS plays in providing the “feathers” for our ākonga to thrive. It reflects our shared commitment to creating an environment where ākonga are empowered to fly confidently toward their goals, uplifted by the collective effort of our kura, whānau, and community.
Ngā mihi for entrusting us with your child’s education. We look forward to a collaborative and successful 2025.

Tomorrow we celebrate Waitangi Day, a significant moment in our nation’s history. It is a time to reflect on the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) on 6 February 1840, an agreement between Māori rangatira and the British Crown. While intended to build a shared future, the journey since has been complex and challenging.
At Napier Girls’ High School, we see Waitangi Day as more than a historical event. It is an opportunity to learn from the past, strengthen our understanding of Te Tiriti, and consider how we can contribute to a future based on respect, partnership, and inclusivity. The values of Manakitanga (care and respect), Whānaungatanga (strong relationships), and Kairangi Whaiaro (personal excellence) underpin much of what we do, and these align closely with the principles of the Treaty - partnership, protection, and participation.
As we mark this important day, we encourage our students to reflect on what it means to be part of a diverse and evolving Aotearoa. By learning about our shared history and embracing the values of unity and understanding, we equip the next generation to be thoughtful and engaged citizens.
We wish our whānau all the best for Waitangi Day.

Please note:

Not all schools participated in NCEA Level 1 in 2024. Of the participating students, approximately 70% achieved NCEA Level 1.
The Deadline for NZQA Reviews and Reconsiderations is 19 February
For students who sat NCEA external examinations last year, digital copies of exam papers are available through their NZQA Learner login. Any student who feels there is a discrepancy in their marks/grade is able to apply for ‘a review’ or ‘reconsideration’ A review checks to see whether a cut score or grade has been incorrectly entered. For any exam paper which needs to be remarked students must apply for a reconsideration. There is a charge of $20.40 per achievement standard for reconsiderations which is refunded if the grade is changed. Students whose families qualify for Work & Income, Study Link or a Community Services card can apply to have the fee waived. Students who are considering applying for a reconsideration may want to show their digital exam to the 2024 subject teacher or relevant HOLA (if that staff member has left). For further information on the process please click on this link or contact Rachel Roberts (Principal’s Nominee). Please note that this process does not apply to the Literacy and Numeracy assessments sat by our Year 10 and 11 students. The deadline for Reviews and Reconsideration is Wednesday 19 February.

Amazing Student Coach Opportunity
Te Mahi Ako is offering a chance for FREE enrolment into our NZC Sport Coaching L3 through a scholarship.
This is open to anyone 16 years or older.
The main thing is that they are currently coaching a team, the sporting code does not matter but it needs to be a community club they coach at, i.e. their local rugby, netball, lifesaving, gymnastics, dance, swim club. The enrolment also needs to be under the support of their local sport club, not school.
Expressions of interest close Sunday 16 February 2025.
Check out the website for more information: https://www.hawkesbaynetball.co.nz/play.../u16-u18-academy-1
Lifesaving
Well done to our NGHS tauira who collected medals for their clubs at the Eastern Surf Lifesaving Champs in Mt Maunganui recently. Unfortunately, many events were cancelled due to weather conditions, on the last day.
U19: Lucy Kinnear - 1st swim team
U19: Lucy Angland and Rosa Angland - 3rd beach relay team
U17: Rosa Angland - 3rd beach flags
Reminder
Students are invited to complete the 2025 Sports Registration of Interest form (see link below), to indicate their sports of interest for the coming year. We recommend that you check the "NGHS Sports" page on the school website for specific information regarding your choice of sports, while new students/parents should familiarise themselves with the Player and Parent Guide to Sport at NGHS. Year 9 students will complete this form at the start of the school year once they have their school email address up and running.
The link to register is here or can also be found on the NGHS website under the Sports page.
A trial schedule will be sent out directly to students who have registered for those sports. Students need to monitor their school emails and daily notices for further information about their particular sports. The sports trial schedule will also be placed on the @nghs_sports instagram page and the sports office noticeboard in the gym.
Calling all Coaches!!
Please note each of our sports teams are dependent on coach and manager volunteers being available - parents and whānau are invited to volunteer within the registration form 🏉🎾🏑🏓⚽️
Alternatively, please contact sport@nghs.school.nz for more information.

Welcome to 2025. Another exciting year lies ahead as we begin to plan and prepare our Performing Arts programme.
Something that will be in the forefront of your creative mind now is the extra-curricular Music and Drama lessons and the co-curricular Dance, Drama, and Music activities offered here at NGHS.
Week 3 (next week) sees the returning itinerant students’ lessons begin. Students should have indicated their intention to return by now. Please keep an eye out for the timetable and come prepared for your lesson.
Year 9 and new students can now sign up for Instrumental and Drama tuition via the Google Form that has been emailed to them and their whānau. These must be completed by Wednesday 12 February. Lessons for you will begin in week 4.
Co-curricular activities kick off in week 3. Many groups are open to everyone, so check out the opportunities in Nixon Block on the noticeboard.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Tobin in the Performing Arts office.
The Performing Arts Team - Ms Tobin, Ms Edwards, Mr Atkinson, Mrs Dolley
Our new International students arrived last week and have undertaken local sightseeing activities during Orientation Week.
Congratulations to Elly (pictured below) from South Korea; she joined us as a shy Year 9 student in 2020, endured three years without returning to her home country due to the pandemic, showed resilience during cyclone Gabrielle, enjoyed hostel boarding, and was an International Student Leader for two years. She graduated Year 13 at the end of 2024. Elly is proud of her NCEA results and is now enrolled at the University of Canterbury.
This term we are hosting students from Japan, China, Thailand, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, and New Caledonia. The new students attended the school pōwhiri. It is an exciting journey for each student as they embrace our culture and make new friends.
Enrolments for terms 2 & 3 are underway; we are recruiting more homestay families.
Would your family be interested in hosting an International student?
If you enjoy interacting with other cultures and showing students our kiwi way of life, please get in touch, we would love to hear from you: international@nghs.school.nz / 021 763 142.
Ms Jo Stickley - Manager of International Students
We are getting organised for another busy year of Duke of Edinburgh. We are going to have a regular article in the school newsletter to help keep our school community informed regarding our programme.
Brooke Duncan is the Student Leader for the award this year (pictured). Congratulations Brooke, on a leadership role that is very well deserved.
Over the holiday break our award participants have been busy completing their specific sections which I am now busy approving. This is a good opportunity to remind all participants to keep their online record books up to date.
Congratulations to the many of you who have now completed your award and have registered for the next. If you need to register, please email me and I will send you the link.
Important dates this term:
14 February: BRONZE online training. This will take place at school from 12.30pm - 3.00pm. Students will need to finish the online training at home.
22 - 23 February: SILVER and GOLD Training at Makahika, Levin.

2025 PTA Welcome Drinks and Nibbles - Monday 17 February at 7.00pm
The NGHS PTA provides valuable support to our kura in a variety of different ways. The PTA would like to invite all parents & caregivers to join us on Monday 17 February for drinks and nibbles at 7pm in the staffroom. This is a great way for you to get to know other parents and hear from our Principal about what is happening in school. We would love to meet some new people and you do not need to commit to attending regular meetings or taking on any responsibilities.
Our annual fundraising event, the NGHS Affordable Arts Exhibition, is scheduled for 25 - 27 July this year. If you are unable to join us on 17 February there will be an opportunity to meet some of our members at the Year 9 Whānau Evening on Tuesday 4 March. Alternatively if you would like to be in email contact with one of our committee members please email rroberts@nghs.school.nz

Road safety around our school site is very important to us as it affects our students, staff, parents, neighbours and other road users.
Students should be dropped off either on Coote Road, Shakespeare Road, or at the Cathedral.
Please keep clear of Clyde Road as it is a narrow road and is the only access road for a large community on the hill past the school. Hence, Clyde Road is not be used for dropping off students as it leads to congestion and safety issues.
Please obey the road code, in particular no stopping on yellow broken lines and no parking across driveways. Please be courteous and respectful of all road users.
Our designated drop-off zone on Coote Road is the white box behind the bus bay.
Please note there is no parking opposite the bus bay on Coote Road between 8.00 - 9.00am and 3.00 - 4.00pm.
Napier City Council issued a number of infringement notices last year. Keeping Coote Road clear for traffic improves the safety of our students significantly.
Any students who are new to driving to school, please ensure you have filled out the 'drive to school' form (available from outside the student centre).
Your help with road safety around our school is most appreciated.
Message from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora:
The Meningococcal B (MenB vaccine), and Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccines are available for free to rangatahi aged 13-25 years who are entering (or who are in) their first year of close living situations including boarding schools, youth justice facilities, university halls of residence and military barracks.
The Meningoccoal vaccines are free for rangatahi for up to three months before moving in and during their first year in close living situations. Rangitahi will require a single dose of the MenACWY vaccine and two doses of the MenB vaccine given 8 weeks apart. The MenACWY and first dose of MenB vaccines can be given at the same time.
To get the best available protection against this preventable disease, rangatahi should be fully immunised against Meningococcal disease before moving into the close living facility.
Whānau can receive their immunisations from many community health providers including many pharmacies. Visit Book a vaccine to find a suitable immunisation site.
