Empowering ākonga to achieve success and fulfilment, for themselves, whānau and community
Tēnā koutou katoa.
In week 2 of next term, the school hall will be transformed into a stunning art gallery - exhibiting works from professional artists from all around New Zealand, and some very special NGHS student pieces as well. This is an annual highlight in our school calendar and the PTA have been busy behind the scenes organising this significant fundraiser for our kura. This year sees a rebrand of the event to Art For All - re-emphasising that there is really something for everyone to fall in love with and take home! The money raised supports various school programmes, in particular around wellbeing, and provides additional resources that directly enhance student learning. Be quick to get tickets to the Opening Night Gala on Friday 25 July - and be first to see what is on offer and purchase the piece (or pieces) you want!
The inspirational movie Tinā has certainly raised the profile of the Big Sing in the wider community. Here at NGHS it has always been a focal point of our extra curricular choral programme, and on Wednesday night at the Gala concert, our Ad Lucem choir received two awards. We now need to wait for the other regional rounds to be completed to see if we progress through to the next level of the competition. Many of these students have been involved in Chamber Music, RockQuest, and the Big Sing - learning the essential life skill of jumping from one gig to the next without missing a beat!
Finally, a reminder that school is closed on Friday 20 June to recognise Matariki - a chance to come together with whānau to acknowledge the year gone by, plan for the future, and celebrate the present. Students will also have a distance learning day on Monday 23 June to allow parents of senior students (Year 11-13) the opportunity to discuss progress with teachers at this critical time of the year. Work will be set by teachers through Google Classroom or pre-assigned in class. Please let the office know if you require your daughter (Year 9 & 10) to be supervised at school that day.

Chamber Music Contest 2025 Results
On Tuesday 2 June we had 15 groups compete in the Chamber Music District heats which was held at the Blythe Centre, Iona College, Havelock North. All our students have been rehearsing diligently over the past term and a half. Each and every group presented themselves extremely well and were a real credit to our kura. We had four NGHS groups and a combined NGHS, HNHS and Lindisfarne group selected to compete at the District finals on Wednesday evening which was fantastic as only 8 groups were invited to compete in this section.
NGHS’s N0 Strings Attached were also invited as they were receiving a special award. They won the Original Student Composition Award: Lily Harrington, Emma Duncan, Keely Flynn and Lucy Duncan performed. Lily wrote this original composition for her Chamber group.
The following are the four NGHS groups and Zilin’s combined Chamber Music group, who competed in the District finals.
Triple Trebles: Wei Mi Huang, Linda Meng, Emily Li
Perfecto Quartetto: Eva Aparicio Pierard, Isobel Stubbs, Connie Zeng, Javier Aparicio Pierard (NBHS)
Trio Di Tartini who won the IRMT Encouragement Award: Connie Zeng, Emily Li, Joey Li
In your Drings who won KBB Music Award: Mia Nichol, Sofia Irvine, Maddy Dolley
The Treble Makers won the Best Overall Award: This combined school group included Zilin Zhao on piano. They will now move onto the next stage of the competition in Wellington later this month.
Congratulations to all involved and especially the groups who gained awards. So very proud of you all. Thank you to all our music tutors for your mahi and support towards this event.
Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) Competition
Year 11 student Eleanor Deed has been awarded a Highly Commended for her Static Image in the recent Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) Competition. Congratulations Eleanor!
Rockquest 2025 Results
On the evening of Saturday 7 June, our two NGHS/NBHS groups competed in the Rockquest Regional Finals at the Toitoi Arts & Event Centre in Hastings.
What a night! 16 bands hit the stage and a variety of music genres were blasted out to a very appreciative audience. The lighting was spectacular as were the bands performing.
LUCIDATION hit the stage as the third act, which consists of NGHS students: Tayla Baxter on guitar, Audrey Anna Robin on vocals, Chloe Evans on bass and Manawa Rakete from NBHS on drums. Their heavy metal original compositions were AWESOME. The groupies were there to support them… front stage!
Tori Gibbs and Eliza Woods with their duo, who were placed in the top 2 of the regional contest performing Tori’s original composition, were also invited to return to compete on Saturday as guest artists. Tori was awarded the BEST Lyrics Award for her original composition on the night.
Well done to both groups. You really do rock! Thank you to Jason Alexander, our Rock Group tutor for your mahi and support.

Big Sing 2025 Results
We had a busy and exciting day on Wednesday 11 June, as our all-comers choir, Ngā Ihi o te Rā and our auditioned choir, Ad Lucem competed at the East Coast Big Sing Regional Competition.
Ngā Ihi o te Rā performed in the morning session with a diverse line-up of songs ranging from an excerpt from a Baroque Oratorio right up to an arrangement of a Coldplay song! For their New Zealand song, the choir performed the beautiful song ‘I Te Pō’ by Gisborne musician Rob Ruha. The choir performed commendably, and was the biggest choir on stage by some way, with a huge 89 students!
Ad Lucem were up in the afternoon session. They had been working very hard, rehearsing twice a week for a term and half, and even giving up a Saturday to do a workshop with Elisha Fa’i So’oialo, the arranger of our Samoan song ‘Sina Oe/Manu o le Vaveao’. Her work with the choir clearly paid off, as Ad Lucem won the award for ‘Best Performance of a New Zealand Composition/Arrangement’ for their performance of ‘Sina Oe’. The energy they brought to their performance was also rewarded with the ‘Audience Impact’ trophy, an award given to the piece best received by the audience at the Gala Concert. Special mention must be given to choir member Destiny Tuese, who helped the choir perfect their pronunciation and actions and also led the mili pati in our performance
Their other two songs were the beautiful ‘And So it Goes’ by Billy Joel, where the song was started and finished by a lovely solo from Maddy Dolley, and ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ by English composer John Rutter, which was a particular showcase for our sopranos with its soaring high notes!
Mr Atkinson was incredibly proud of both choirs for their focus on stage and their audience support for each other and for other schools off-stage. We will now have to wait until Monday 23 June to find out if we have been selected to go to Cadenza or Finale, but whatever happens our students can take enormous pride in what they have already achieved.
