Empowering ākonga to achieve success and fulfilment, for themselves, whānau and community

Tāima Kōrero - Time to Talk
This week we were fortunate to host Brett Harvey, kindly sponsored by our PTA, who delivered his powerful presentation “Time to Talk” to both our staff and whānau. Brett challenged us to open up honest conversations about some of the difficult issues facing young people today, from navigating pressures in the online world to understanding respectful relationships and consent.
His message was clear: talking openly, asking questions, and listening with empathy are the keys to creating a safer, kinder, and more supportive culture. Whānau and staff alike came away with practical tools and a renewed commitment to speaking up, supporting one another, and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
We thank Brett for sharing his wisdom, and for reminding us that the conversations we have today shape the wellbeing of our community tomorrow. If you have any concerns about online safety you can contact netsafe https://netsafe.org.nz/ and encourage your daughter to speak to a member of our pastoral team - her dean, guidance counsellor or someone in the senior leadership team.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
This year marks a momentous occasion: the 50th anniversary of the first Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. From Sunday 14 September to Saturday 20 September, we will celebrate this milestone and affirm the importance of te reo Māori for all our ākonga.
The relevance of te reo Māori today has been powerfully echoed by the new Māori Queen, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po, in her first public speech. At the Koroneihana celebrations, she called for Māori to "walk a new path" towards a future of liberation and success "forever" (āke, āke, āke).
These words hold deep meaning for rangatahi. Students are challenged to embrace the potential of te reo Māori, not merely as a subject, but as a vital part of their identity and a key to their future. By learning te reo and tikanga, students can:
· Strengthen their sense of belonging in Aotearoa New Zealand and the world.
· Develop a richer understanding of tikanga.
· Open up a wide range of future career and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Next week, we reflect on the powerful journey of te reo Māori over the past 50 years and heed the call to ensure its vitality "forever." All students are encouraged to get involved in the school's activities and explore how te reo Māori can be a part of their own promising future.
"Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori." The Language is the essence of Māori identity.
As this is the last pānui for Term 3 I want to thank you for your wonderful support of our staff and school. Wishing you all the best for the upcoming term break.
Ngā mihi nui

NCEA Level 2 and 3 Music Performance Evening
On Wednesday evening, our Year 12 and 13 Music students took to the stage to present the second instalment of their performance portfolios. The audience was treated to a rich tapestry of sound, with music flowing from pianos, flutes, violins, guitars, and the pure tones of solo and duet voices.
For our Year 13 students, this evening also marked the exciting beginning of their Scholarship journey. We look forward to celebrating their hard work and artistry next term when they share their Scholarship Performance Portfolios in a dedicated concert.
A heartfelt thank you goes to every student for the passion and dedication that went into crafting such polished, professional performances. Your mahi shone through every note.
We also extend a very special acknowledgement to Mrs Sarah Lee. Her exceptional accompanying skills elevate each performance, and her countless hours of rehearsal and encouragement ensure that our students truly shine on stage.
Young Musician of the Year
On Saturday 6 September at the Blythe Centre, Iona College, Zilin Zhao took to the stage in the Young Musician of the Year Preliminary Round, presenting a dazzling programme of three contrasting works:
Sonata in C major, Op. 2, 1st movement, Allegro con brio – Beethoven
La Campanella in G-sharp minor – Liszt
Suite para Piano, Op. 2, 3rd movement Toccata – Piazzolla
From the first notes, Zilin captured her audience. Adjudicator Roy Tankersley praised her for “beautifully rendered opening phrases, a lovely controlled tone, clarity, lightness, and sparkle – a true curtain-raiser for the competition festival.” Her performance was met with warm appreciation from both audience and adjudicator, showcasing not only her technical mastery but also her flair for expression. We are delighted to share that Zilin has earned a place in the Hawke’s Bay Finals this Friday evening, where she will perform alongside five other outstanding finalists for guest adjudicator Dr Jian Liu. We wish Zilin every success for her upcoming performance!
Piano Masterclass with Dr Jian Liu
Aspiring pianists won’t want to miss this special opportunity. On Saturday 13 September at St Paul’s Napier (time tbc, likely afternoon, please see Ms Tobin if interested), internationally acclaimed concert pianist and Head of Piano Studies at the New Zealand School of Music, Dr Jian Liu, will host a masterclass.
This event is open to all keen music students – a rare chance to observe or participate as Dr Liu shares his expertise, guiding young pianists through technical challenges and unlocking deeper musical expression.
Students are free of charge.
Youthfest Finals Success
Over the weekend, seven of our students took part in the Youthfest Final, showcasing outstanding performances in a competition of exceptionally high quality.
Their entry, Water, Please by New Zealand playwright Nathan Joe, is a dark comedy exploring how society can refuse to help those in need, even when resources are available. This piece proudly represented Hawke’s Bay at the Youthfest Finals and was brilliantly directed by Edie Croad.
Congratulations to the cast — Edie Croad, Isobella Christie, Tori Gibbs, Emily Davidson-Payne, Sammie Scott, and Sophie Nicol — for performing with such energy and commitment. A special thank you also to Stella Edwards, who provided excellent technical support.
We are incredibly proud of the whole team for their achievement, with a special mention to Tori Gibbs, who was one of only four students across the entire competition to receive an Acting Award. Well done, team!
Year 13 Drama Class Production
Ed Sheeran Tastes Like Chicken by Alister Emerson
Set in a world where miniature Ed Sheerans live peacefully in the wild, Hannah (H for short) — a feisty, roller-derby-playing adventure guide — must protect the last of these tiny creatures from BARRACUDA INDUSTRIES, a ruthless global corporation.
When H rescues an injured Miniature Ed Sheeran, things take a dramatic turn as the thugs of BARRACUDA INDUSTRIES kidnap it, planning to sell it to the highest bidder… or turn it into sausages!
Determined to save the creature, H gathers a team of unlikely heroes and embarks on a race against time. Through comedy and elements of the absurd, the play highlights the very real absurdity of threats facing the world’s last Māui dolphins in New Zealand and the critically endangered vaquita dolphins in Mexico.
Our Year 13 Drama class has worked tirelessly — overcoming challenges and interruptions — to bring this hilarious and thought-provoking play to life. We are excited to share our work with friends and whānau.

Netball Senior A
Six wins from the first six matches took the senior A into a tough semi- final against St Mary’s. This game resulted in their first loss of the tournament 34-25. St Marys came out firing after coming off of a hard loss the day before. Although, it was pleasing to see NGHS finish strong by winning the last quarter. Going into the 3rd vs 4th game, they used that loss as fuel to push through that last 40 minutes. Tired bodies were definitely feeling it, but like true Napier Girls' style the girls persevered, winning 39-26. It’s an incredible achievement to finish 3rd in the Lower North Island. Thank you to everyone who’s helped along the way. The following weeks will be used carefully to work on and refine some areas, to ensure we can come out better and stronger at Nationals. The team were amazing on and off the court, representing our kura and NGHS values with pride.
Hockey 1st XI
For winter tournament week the team headed down to Wellington ready to compete against the top 32 school teams in New Zealand in the Federation Cup and Marie Fry tournament. We began the tournament by winning our three pool games and our first crossover game, guaranteeing us a place in the top 8. Unfortunately, we lost our last three games 1-0 but ended the tournament in 8th place, an incredible feat. This tournament was an amazing experience especially for the eight players that made their Federation Cup debut. This season was undoubtedly one to remember and as a team we are proud of the achievements we accomplished this year. Our successes could have never happened without our extremely dedicated coaches, Shannel Tamati-Herrick and Kaitlin Cotter, and our manager, Rachel Roberts. The unwavering support and guidance provided by them has helped our team grow and improve substantially and is something we are forever grateful for. We are also thankful to Dominie Cresswell for coming on tournament with us and helping us during that week while Kaitlin was competing in Australia with the Black Sticks.
Hockey 2nd XI
The began the week with a winning streak, winning three of our games and drawing one -into the top 8 of our table and through to quarter finals! Quarter finals were tough and challenging with some very talented teams. The final placing was 8th overall. Throughout the tough games and player injuries the team still managed to have lots of fun and create many life long memories! The following players were farewelled: Hannah, Lotti, Kaela, Georgia and Jenna in their last game of hockey for NGHS. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a great time with great hockey. Thanks to Geoff, Chris, Jan and our supporters who have helped the team this season!
Football 1st XI
A fun week away at NZSS Premier Football Nationals. We faced some very tough opponents in pool play and knockout. Each game we played was a hard fought battle, with three games ending in a penalty shootout. In total we scored 7 goals and conceded 9, proving every game was a close encounter. Although the results didn’t go our way and we ended up 29th place, the girls had a great time and were awarded the team ‘fair play’ award. This was for excellent sportsmanship and attitude throughout the tournament. The team didn’t drop their heads when faced with the obstacles of injuries and illness, and kept pushing until the very end. Overall the girls can be proud of themselves after this season. We wish all the best to our leavers for this year and thank them for their endless dedication to the sport. A big shoutout to our coaches, Shelley Cameron and Hayden Henderson, for all their hard work towards the team this season. They helped us grow and we couldn’t have done it without them. Thank you to our manager, Amanda Greville, who showed up to every game with a smile on her face and some encouraging words.
Football Invitational XI
The team played a total of seven games, giving their full effort in each match. Despite facing some tough competition, the girls stayed positive and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout. It was a great opportunity to play quality football and challenge their skills. Their best performance was a close 1-0 loss to Trident, a confident performance against a strong and experienced Northland team. The highlight for the team was a dominant win in their final match. Thanks to Dave Allen and Alisa Schlierike for the time and enthusiasm given to this team, and to the tribe of whānau supporters.
Basketball Senior A
The team played with lots of determination and pride. The cross over game against Manukura was an amazing, nail biting heart stopping game that went into overtime. Full time score 64 All, final score 77-70. We finished 7th with our last game win over Wellington Girls' - some great plays and lots of smiles. Great way to farewell our Year 13s, Stirling and Sapphire - having fun.
Thanks to Clifton and Mrs Petera for their tireless support of the team.
Thank you to our whānau for their support during Winter Tournament Week
A key highlight of Winter Tournament Week is the wonderful support we receive from our whānau, both on the sidelines and behind the scenes. Whether it’s providing a steady supply of home baking, helping with meals for teams staying away, managing laundry, or cheering enthusiastically—often proudly dressed in our school colours of white and blue — your efforts are truly appreciated by students, staff, coaches, and managers alike.
This year, it was especially heartening to see so many grandparents attending the tournaments. For some, particularly those with granddaughters in Year 13, these events held special meaning and made the experience even more memorable.
We thank all our whānau for their incredible support, which plays a vital role in the success and spirit of Winter Tournament Week.
Surf Lifesaving
Amazing results for Year 12 ākonga Lucy Kinnear. Lucy had a superb weekend racing in the Battle of the Tasman. Lucy raced in both pool rescue and surf disciplines representing the NZL Youth Team. Even more WOW was her second place behind World Champion, fellow Kiwi Zoe Crawford, in the 100 Mannikin Carry with Fins event.
Gymnastics
Congratulations to Nadia Liesebach for her fantastic results from the Central Championship competition, in early September.
She placed 1st in step 8 in the Vault, U-Bars, Beam and 4th in the floor, which resulted in 1st place overall.
Football - Giving Back
Well done to Marlee Duncan, Jenna Allan, Amelia Roborgh and Stevie Schaw who attended the Special Olympics Secondary Schools' Football to help referee last week. Our ākonga showed they truly understood the essence of ‘Special Olympics’ sports and they did an amazing job. Tino pai and kia ora rawa atu. ⚽⚽⚽
