Kia ora whānau.
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend with their ākonga — it’s always special to have that extra time together.
Congratulations to all our Hewett House girls who participated in Winter Tournament Week. Whether on the field, court, or supporting from the sidelines, we are so proud of the effort, energy, and sportsmanship you showed.
The spring weather has been lifting spirits, and it’s exciting to see more outdoor activities taking place. With the new season also comes forward planning. We’re pleased to share that Stage 5 of our renovation project is now underway. Plans (which you can view on the wall in the rec room) reveal that Dorms C, D, and E will be completely redesigned and modernised — ready for 2026. This is a significant step in making Hewett House an even better home for our boarding community.
Study leave paperwork for our Year 11, 12, & 13 ākonga has been sent out today via email. It would be much appreciated if you could complete and return by Monday 6 October at the latest. It is important that we know what your daughter's movements will be over the study period and when to expect her in hostel.
We’re looking forward to a busy and positive lead-up to the end of Term 3.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark
2026 Plans

Our Derived Grade Examinations have now been completed, and reports will be sent home at the end of this week. These reports will show the results for each examination your rangatahi sat.
If your rangatahi was absent from an exam, the report will record a Not Achieved grade. This is part of the NZQA process, even if they later completed a “catch-up” paper. While the grade itself cannot be changed, the catch-up exams are still very worthwhile — they give students valuable practice under exam conditions and feedback to guide their preparation for the end-of-year externals.
Please be reassured that a “Not Achieved” on this report has no impact on your child’s final NCEA results. The results that truly matter will come from the external examinations in November. Derived Grade results are simply kept on file as a safety net, and are only used if NZQA needs to apply an Unexpected Event Grade (for example, if a student is unwell and cannot sit an external exam).

Kia Ora!
Can you believe we’re already in Week 8! It has been a busy term, with finishing off the winter sports season with tournament week. Our teams have shown amazing dedication and teamwork on and off the field, and their hard work has paid off! A big thank you to the staff, coaches, friends and family for their support throughout the whole season.
On Wednesday evening we welcomed Napier Boys’ Young Farmers Club, hosting an Agri Quiz Night. It was a fun and competitive evening covering knowledge of agriculture and rural life. A big thank you to the sponsors and all who made this event a success!
On Thursday evening our juniors went to NBHS for the Junior Social. It was a fantastic night filled with energy, laughter, and plenty of fun. It was a great way for them to celebrate the end of the term together.
The Year 13 boarders enjoyed an afternoon with the Year 13 at Scinde House this week. It was a fun opportunity to bond with our brother school again.
Well done to our senior ākonga for completing their derived grade exams recently. We trust that you are all focused and studying hard for the end of year exams now.
As we get closer to the end of the term, remember to keep the energy high and work hard!

On Wednesday night, our Young Farmers Club hosted the Napier Boys’ High School Young Farmers for a lively and competitive Agri Quiz Night. It’s safe to say the evening was a massive success with plenty of light hearted competition, banter and use of brainpower!
Students were split into mixed teams of six and put their farming smarts to the test through a range of quiz rounds. These included agriculture knowledge, photo identification, and even a "Who Am I?" mystery celebrity round. The "Who Am I?" round sparked a lot of guessing, laughter, and kept everyone on their toes.
This fantastic night wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors, who donated awesome prizes for our top teams and lucky spot prize winners. It's been incredible to see the support for this initiative and we couldn't be more grateful. A huge thank you to:
· NZ Young Farmers
· FMG
· Ravensdown
· Norsewear
The night wrapped up with the announcement of the final placings, spot prizes and one very lucky student walking away with an MKM jersey valued at $200!
After competing in the Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition throughout high school, and more recently representing East Coast at two nationals, Liana and I have gained a real insight into the agricultural sector and the incredible opportunities it offers. These experiences showed us just how diverse, innovative, and rewarding a future in Ag can be.
This exposure inspired me to share this passion with others, especially those who might not yet realise the number of career opportunities within the Ag sector. Organising events like the Agri Quiz Night was one way to do that, creating a fun, inclusive space where students could engage with agriculture in a social setting.
Seeing so many students come together over a shared interest in agriculture and rural life makes me excited to see where this passion will take our club members in the future!
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making the Quiz Night such a success and most importantly, to all the students who came along and got involved!

Illness
If you're feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, please stay home and take the time you need to recover. Your health — and the health of others — comes first.
Change to 5 / 7 Day Status
If your daughter is wanting to change her boarding status ie to 5 day or 7 day this needs to come to the Hostel Manager in writing please.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs. Once again, thank you for your support.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will be able to have toast and spreads. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings. Thanks for your support with this.
Please note a change of dates for the upcoming closures related to the replacement of the temporary Bailey bridge.
The reason for the changed dates is because the construction programme for the project has shifted by one week. This has had a flow on effect meaning the contingency date of Saturday 6 September for closures are now required. Please see the new dates below (these are the original contingency dates):
10.00am Saturday 6 September to 10.00am Sunday 7 September – Full 24-hour closure to remove the Bailey bridge and install the Acrow bridge.
Sunday 7, Monday 8, and Tuesday 9 September – Night closures from 9.00pm to 5.00am to widen the bridge approaches.
We love celebrating successes at Hewett House.
If you have some news (and/or photos) we would love to hear about it so we can include it in future pānui editions :)
