Kia ora whānau,
We would like to send our warmest best wishes to all of our senior students who have now officially begun study leave. Good luck with your exams — we are all cheering you on!
Thank you to all the families who sent in their completed forms. If your plans change at any point, please keep us updated so we can maintain accurate records and keep all our students safe.
Welcoming our 2027 Year 9 Boarders on Friday was an absolute highlight as we hosted our Hostel Orientation Day for our 2027 Year 9 cohort! It was a fantastic day full of connection, enthusiasm, and great energy as our future boarders got to experience hostel life.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark
The Board has approved a 4% increase to boarding fees for 2027.
The increase takes into account rising food costs, wages, fuel and energy prices.
Rates are as follows:
5 day $14,420
7 day $15,900

By the last week of Term 4, families must email the Hostel Manager hostelmanager@nghs.school.nz confirming whether their daughter will be a 5-day or 7-day boarder for the following year.
• 7-Day Boarding: Once a student has elected to be a 7-day boarder, this arrangement will remain in place for the full year and cannot be changed to 5-day.
• 5-Day Boarding: Students who are 5-day boarders may request to move to 7-day boarding at any time from Term 1, however, they cannot revert back to 5-day within that same calendar year.
• Extra Nights: The "extra nights" option remains available for 5-day boarders who need short-term accommodation for special events or commitments.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure fairness and clarity for all our boarding families.
This year as a fundraiser for the Hewett House Hostel Young Farmers Club we are making a 2027 calendar. There has been a competition between the girls to pick the best photos to go in the calendar. There are only 70 calendars made to be bought so get in fast. Each calendar costs $25.

Kia ora koutou,
Term 4 is always a busy time in the hostel, with the weeks seeming to pass in the blink of an eye. Between assessments, end-of-year activities, and the many traditions that make this term so special, there is plenty to look forward to. For now, however, our senior students are turning their attention to the important task of preparing for their upcoming examinations.
Next week, NZQA exams begin for our senior boarders. We encourage our ākonga to establish a manageable study routine and make the most of the time available to them. Setting realistic goals, following a revision timetable, and taking advantage of prep time and staff support can all help students feel more organised and confident as they head into their exams.
Our junior boarders are working hard as they complete their end-of-year assessments. These are a valuable opportunity to reflect on their learning, consolidate key knowledge, and continue developing effective study habits for the future. Our Year 9 students also have their class Science trips to the National Aquarium this week or next, offering an engaging opportunity to see classroom learning come to life.
As we move through these final weeks of the school year, we encourage all our ākonga to maintain a positive attitude, manage their time well, and look out for one another. Remember that success comes from consistent effort, asking for help when needed, and finding a healthy balance between study and rest.
We wish all our ākonga the very best with their examinations and assessments.
Ngā mihi,
Mrs Caroline Johnson
Hostel Academic Dean
What a busy and exciting few weeks it has been around the hostel!
A huge congratulations to everyone who took part in our Talent Show. It was awesome to see so many people getting up, putting themselves out there and sharing their talents. There were some amazing acts, and everyone should be proud of having the confidence to get up in front of everyone and give it a go.
We are now heading into our last week together before study leave begins. To all our seniors, make the most of this final week, enjoy the time together and, most importantly, best of luck with your exams. All the hard work you have put in throughout the year will hopefully pay off!
To our juniors, with the seniors away, it is important to keep yourselves busy, get involved and make the most of the time around the hostel. Keep the energy up and continue making the most of what hostel life has to offer.
Good luck to everyone for the weeks ahead!
Nga mihi,
Lucy, Rose and Morgan

Over the long weekend, two of our rangatahi competed in the annual Hawke’s Bay A & P show. Zahra Little competed in the High School Shearing Competition on Thursday. She sheared very well, finished with the fastest time, and overall came third. On Friday Zahra also completed in the Novice Shearing Competition completing another great shear for her first year competing. Emma Brady also competed on Thursday in the Youth Stock Judging Contest. Split into three sections: cattle, sheep, and wool, the contest was a great chance to learn some new skills. Well done to both of our girls.
Congratulations to Lily Hicks who has been selected by Rotary New Zealand to travel to Auckland in order to explore tertiary-level science, mathematics and technology over two weeks in January 2027.
She will attend the Rotary National Science and Technology Forum with fellow student Isobel Stubbs and 168 like-minded Year 12 students from all across New Zealand.
This is a fantastic accomplishment and we wish Lily all the best for this experience.
We love celebrating success at Hewett House so if you have news or photos we would love to receive them for future editions.
7-day Boarders
For planning purposes, it is very helpful if our 7-day boarders can let us know by 9.00am each Thursday if they will be away for the weekend. This greatly assists our kitchen team with accurate meal planning and helps us avoid unnecessary food preparation and wastage.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff go to considerable effort to cater for your needs.

Netsafe
Netsafe is New Zealand’s independent, non-profit online safety charity. Taking a technology-positive approach to the challenges digital technology presents, they work to help people in New Zealand take advantage of the opportunities available through technology by providing practical tools, support and advice for managing online challenges. Netsafe keep people of all ages safe online by providing free support, advice and education seven days a week.
Netsafe can assist you in getting content removed from some places online and talk to you about the other options available to you – for example, taking the case to the Police. If someone is threatening to share nude images/videos of you or blackmailing you, we can also let you know what you can do about it. Our team talks to people in situations like this everyday, so we’re used to talking about it and can provide you all the information you need.
There are apps that can help too, like Take it Down takeitdown.ncmec.org. This is an anonymous tool for anyone under 18 to get your intimate image or video removed from social media, including Facebook.
