Kia ora whānau,
We had a lovely evening on Monday welcoming our Year 9 and 10 whānau into Hewett House for our Whānau Dinner. Thank you to everyone who ventured out on what turned into a particularly miserable night of weather! It is always special to have our families together and to share some kai, kōrero and connection with our wider Hewett House whānau.
As we head towards the end of another busy term, it is a good time to remind ourselves about the importance of kindness and looking out for one another. The girls have packed a lot into this term and, as the weeks draw to a close, we are all starting to feel a little tired and ready for a well-earned break.
Girls, sometimes when we are tired, our patience can run a little thin, so this is the time to make an extra effort with one another. A kind word, including someone, offering a helping hand, or simply thinking before we speak can make a big difference.
Let’s finish the term showing the very best of the Hewett House spirit—supporting one another, being kind, and remembering that everyone deserves to feel valued and included.

5-day / 7-day Boarding Status for 2027
By the last week of Term 4, families must email the Hostel Manager hostelmanager@nghs.school.nz confirming whether their daughter will be a 5-day or 7-day boarder for the following year.
• 7-Day Boarding: Once a student has elected to be a 7-day boarder, this arrangement will remain in place for the full year and cannot be changed to 5-day.
• 5-Day Boarding: Students who are 5-day boarders may request to move to 7-day boarding at any time from Term 1, however, they cannot revert back to 5-day within that same calendar year.
• Extra Nights: The "extra nights" option remains available for 5-day boarders who need short-term accommodation for special events or commitments.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure fairness and clarity for all our boarding families.

If your daughter will not be returning to Hewett House in 2027, we require notice in writing to the Hostel Manager hostelmanager@nghs.school.nz by Monday 12 October.
As per your hostel agreement, failing to give the correct notice could result in one terms fees being charged in lieu of notice.
We currently have a waiting list of families eager to experience boarding at Hewett House. This helps us plan for the year ahead and offer places to prospective boarders.

Our Derived Grade Examinations have now been completed, and reports will be sent home shortly. These reports will show the results achieved in each examination your rangatahi sat.
If your rangatahi was absent from an examination, the report will record a Not Achieved grade. This is part of the NZQA process, even if they subsequently completed a catch-up examination. While the grade itself cannot be changed, catch-up examinations remain very valuable. They provide students with an opportunity to practise under exam conditions and receive feedback that can help them prepare for their end-of-year external examinations.
Please be reassured that a Not Achieved grade on this report will not affect your child’s final NCEA results. The results that matter for their final NCEA achievement will come from the external examinations in November. Derived Grade results are kept on file as a safety net and are only used if NZQA needs to apply an Unexpected Event Grade. For example, if a student has a serious illness, injury or unforeseen emergency and is unable to sit an external examination.
In Week 9, our Year 10 ākonga will sit the Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) if they have not yet achieved these requirements. These assessments will also be available to Year 11 students who are still working towards these credits. As a reminder, students from Year 10 onwards must achieve 10 credits in both Literacy and Numeracy to gain an NCEA qualification.

Hello everyone!
What a busy week it has been with Tournament Week! A huge congratulations to everyone who has been involved and to everyone who has done so well. It has been awesome seeing everyone getting involved, supporting each other and giving everything a go!
The weather is finally starting to warm up, which is very exciting! Hopefully we can enjoy some more sunny days around the hostel.
Junior Social is next week! The theme is Iconic Duos/Groups, which is always a good excuse to dress up and have some fun with your friends. We can’t wait to see all the creative outfits! Have a great week everyone!

7-day Boarders
For planning purposes, it is very helpful if our 7-day boarders can let us know by 9.00am each Thursday if they will be away for the weekend. This greatly assists our kitchen team with accurate meal planning and helps us avoid unnecessary food preparation and wastage.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff go to considerable effort to cater for your needs.

Netsafe keep people of all ages safe online by providing free support, advice and education seven days a week.
Netsafe can assist you in getting content removed from some places online and talk to you about the other options available to you – for example, taking the case to the Police. If someone is threatening to share nude images/videos of you or blackmailing you, we can also let you know what you can do about it. Our team talks to people in situations like this everyday, so we’re used to talking about it and can provide you all the information you need.
There are apps that can help too, like Take it Down takeitdown.ncmec.org. This is an anonymous tool for anyone under 18 to get your intimate image or video removed from social media, including Facebook.
