Kia ora whānau,
Winter has certainly ramped up, and with the usual seasonal bugs doing the rounds, we really appreciate your support in helping us keep our hostel community as healthy as possible. If your daughter has been unwell over the weekend, please keep her at home until she is well enough to return. Returning too soon often means you may need to make another trip to collect her.
While we do have a sick bay, it is designed for short periods of rest and for girls who become mildly unwell during the school day. As a boarding hostel, we are simply not equipped to care for large numbers of unwell girls at one time. Keeping girls at home while they recover also helps prevent illness spreading quickly through our boarding community.
Your junior reports will have arrived home, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading through them and seeing the progress the girls are making. There is lots to celebrate, as well as some great opportunities to keep building on their learning.
A reminder to our junior cohort to make the most of prep time — it is there for you to review your learning, complete work and ask for help when you need it. We also have Maths and Science support available on Thursday evenings, so please take advantage of it.
One of the great things about boarding is that you are surrounded by people who can help. We are in the exceptional position of having around 100 older girls living alongside our juniors, with a huge amount of knowledge and experience between them. Don’t be afraid to ask a senior for some help or advice—you may be surprised at how willing they are to share what they know.
Stay warm and well, everyone!
Ngā mihi nui,

Georgia and Tasmin both did very well at NZSS Swimming Champs last week with some impressive PB’s from both of them.

Kia ora koutou,
Our Junior tauira have now received their mid-year reports. We encourage you to sit down with your daughter to go over her results and feedback together, as this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate her progress, set goals, and identify any areas where extra support might be needed.
Reports and academic results can be accessed anytime through the Parent Portal. A direct link is regularly emailed to all whānau, so if you are not receiving these communications, please contact the school office to ensure your details are up to date. If anything in the report raises questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your child’s Year-Level Dean.
Junior Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held online during the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, 19 August. Please note that students will finish school early at lunchtime on this day. Booking instructions for these online sessions have been sent to you separately via email.
For our senior students, NCEA Derived Grade Examinations will take place from Thursday, 20 August to Friday, 28 August. Senior students have received the Derived Grade Exam Schedule. These exams serve as a vital checkpoint in the academic year, helping students review and apply what they have learned so far. Crucially, these grades may also be used as official evidence for a derived grade if a student is unable to sit their final exams later in the year due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness or bereavement.
Senior students will be on study leave during this assessment period, and we encourage all ākonga to use this time wisely for focused revision. Hostel students are welcome to study in the school library throughout the exam period.
Ngā mihi

Hostel Academic Dean

If there is one thing we would recommend to every girl in hostel, it is GO TO THE BONDING AND QUIZ NIGHTS! They are honestly some of the funniest nights and such a good way to get to know the boys from Scinde hostel at Napier Boys’ High.
Yes, the first few times can be a little awkward. You might stand around wondering who you are meant to talk to, but just go for it. Start a conversation, join a quiz team, have a laugh and before you know it, you’ll be saying hi to people you would have never spoken to otherwise.
And no, you do not have to like them. You don’t have to have a crush, you don’t have to get a boyfriend and you definitely don’t have to spend the whole night trying to find one! Sometimes it is just nice to have boys as friends. As you get older, especially in Year 13, you realise how good these friendships actually are. You have spent years building these relationships, and suddenly you have a whole group of people you can catch up with after school, have a laugh with, or rely on for the very important things in life… like a ball swap. Which coming into year 12 and 13 are very important!
The best thing is that these friendships just grow as you go. You see the same people at bonding nights, quiz nights and different events, and eventually they become people you genuinely enjoy being around. Some of the people you meet through these nights could end up being friends you keep for years after leaving school.
So seriously, get involved girls! Go with some friends, be brave, talk to someone new and have a good time. You might go thinking you’re just there for the quiz and end up making some of your best memories, meeting new friends, getting the best chicken burgers every time and possibly finding your future ball-swap contact!

7-day Boarders
For planning purposes, it is very helpful if our 7-day boarders can let us know by 9.00am each Thursday if they will be away for the weekend. This greatly assists our kitchen team with accurate meal planning and helps us avoid unnecessary food preparation and wastage.
Netball Season
If you or someone else is collecting your daughter from the netball courts on a Saturday please email the hostel office no later than midday on Thursday so we can arrange the transport.
Kindo Reminder
Please make sure you've logged into Kindo to pay for your daughter's school-related charges such as sports fees, music tuition and other activities.
Contact hostelfinance@nghs.school.nz if you have any questions regarding your hostel account.
Sickness
If you're feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, please stay home and take the time you need to recover. Your health and the health of others comes first.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office - preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will have toast and spreads made available to you. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff go to considerable effort to cater for your needs.
