Kia ora whānau,
And just like that, we have reached the end of another busy term at Hewett House! It has certainly been a full one, and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a well-earned and restful holiday break. I hope our rangatahi have the opportunity to slow down, recharge their batteries and enjoy some quality time with whānau.
A reminder to our senior whānau that NCEA Study Leave forms were sent out on Monday. Please complete and return these as soon as possible so we have a clear understanding of your daughter’s movements and plans during study leave. This is really important for our planning and, most importantly, ensuring we know where our girls are throughout this period.
We couldn’t finish the term without a little Hewett House fun! Thursday night we had our Just Dance Competition, which provided plenty of laughs, some interesting dance moves and was a great way for the girls to finish the term together.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support throughout the term. Have a safe and restful holiday, enjoy your time together, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the final term of the year.

State Highway 2 Road Closure
Important Message from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi:
We’re closing SH2 just north of the SH5 Napier-Taupō turn off and up to North Shore Road, Whirinaki, from 8pm on Sunday 11 October until 4am on Monday 12 October.
We're renewing the road surface of the approaches to the Esk Rail Overbridge and Esk River Bridge, and we need to close the road because there’s not enough space for both traffic and work to happen safely. This essential bridge maintenance will help keep this section of SH2 safe and reliable for everyone who uses it. The closure is on the final night of the school holidays. It may affect families returning home from holidays and students travelling to boarding school. There is no available detour.

State Highway 2 will close between the SH5 Napier-Taupō turnoff and North Shore Road, Whirinaki, from 8pm on Sunday 11 October until 4am on Monday 12 October.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) are renewing the road surface of the approaches to the Esk Rail Overbridge and Esk River Bridge. A full closure is needed because the road and bridges aren't wide enough to safely accommodate both traffic and the work at the same time. This essential bridge maintenance will help keep this section of highway safe and reliable for everyone who uses it.
There is no available detour. Families returning from school holiday travel between Napier and Wairoa, Napier and Gisborne, or Taupō and Wairoa, and students travelling to boarding school, should plan to pass through the closure area before 8pm.
SH5 Napier-Taupō will remain open. The work is weather dependent, with Sunday 18 October as the back-up date.

5-day / 7-day Boarding Status for 2027
By the last week of Term 4, families must email the Hostel Manager hostelmanager@nghs.school.nz confirming whether their daughter will be a 5-day or 7-day boarder for the following year.
• 7-Day Boarding: Once a student has elected to be a 7-day boarder, this arrangement will remain in place for the full year and cannot be changed to 5-day.
• 5-Day Boarding: Students who are 5-day boarders may request to move to 7-day boarding at any time from Term 1, however, they cannot revert back to 5-day within that same calendar year.
• Extra Nights: The "extra nights" option remains available for 5-day boarders who need short-term accommodation for special events or commitments.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure fairness and clarity for all our boarding families.

If your daughter will not be returning to Hewett House in 2027, we require notice in writing to the Hostel Manager hostelmanager@nghs.school.nz by Monday 12 October.
As per your hostel agreement, failing to give the correct notice could result in one terms fees being charged in lieu of notice.
We currently have a waiting list of families eager to experience boarding at Hewett House. This helps us plan for the year ahead and offer places to prospective boarders.

Kia ora koutou,
As Term 3 comes to an end, I wish everyone a restful and enjoyable holiday. Take some time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with whānau and friends.
With exams beginning on 10 November, the holidays are also a valuable opportunity to get organised and take a few small steps towards preparing for externals. Make a study plan, tidy up your notes, complete any outstanding work, and gather the resources you will need for next term. A little preparation now can make a real difference when revision begins.
Have a wonderful holiday, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for Term 4.

What an amazing term it has been in the hostel! We have had lots of fun activities and events, and it has been great to see everyone getting involved and making the most of their time together.
Our Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner was a huge hit! It was awesome seeing everyone getting into the Christmas spirit, especially with all the creative hats that were made. A big congratulations to everyone who took part, and especially to our Best Hat and Worst Hat winners! There were some very creative (and questionable!) designs.
We also celebrated National Cheeseburger Day, where our lovely kitchen staff treated us to cheeseburgers for lunch. A big thank you to our kitchen team for always putting on delicious meals and making these special days even better!
It has been an amazing term, and we hope everyone takes the time over the holidays to rest, recharge and enjoy some well-deserved time off. Thank you all for making this term such a memorable one in the hostel.
For our Year 13s, it’s getting very close now! Before we know it, you’ll all be heading off on your next adventures and starting the next chapter of your lives. Make the most of these final moments together and enjoy the time you have left in the hostel.

7-day Boarders
For planning purposes, it is very helpful if our 7-day boarders can let us know by 9.00am each Thursday if they will be away for the weekend. This greatly assists our kitchen team with accurate meal planning and helps us avoid unnecessary food preparation and wastage.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff go to considerable effort to cater for your needs.

Netsafe is New Zealand’s independent, non-profit online safety charity. Taking a technology-positive approach to the challenges digital technology presents, they work to help people in New Zealand take advantage of the opportunities available through technology by providing practical tools, support and advice for managing online challenges. Netsafe keep people of all ages safe online by providing free support, advice and education seven days a week.
Netsafe can assist you in getting content removed from some places online and talk to you about the other options available to you – for example, taking the case to the Police. If someone is threatening to share nude images/videos of you or blackmailing you, we can also let you know what you can do about it. Our team talks to people in situations like this everyday, so we’re used to talking about it and can provide you all the information you need.
There are apps that can help too, like Take it Down takeitdown.ncmec.org. This is an anonymous tool for anyone under 18 to get your intimate image or video removed from social media, including Facebook.
