Kia ora whānau,
There has been a wonderful sense of connection and fun around Hewett House. It has been lovely to see so many boarders enjoying the craft trolley activities and board games over the weekends, creating opportunities to relax, unwind, and spend quality time together away from busy schedules and devices.
A special thank you goes to our senior rangatahi who continue to encourage and include younger ākonga in these activities. Your leadership, kindness, and willingness to help create a positive hostel environment does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.
Thursday night’s Hewett House Newspaper Make and Model Challenge was another highlight of the week, with creativity, teamwork, and plenty of laughter filling the Rec Room. It was fantastic to see so many getting involved and enjoying the challenge together.
We hope all of our rangatahi and their whānau enjoy a safe and restful long weekend. We look forward to welcoming our boarders safely back to Hewett House on Tuesday afternoon, ready for school to resume on Wednesday.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark

Kia ora koutou.
It is hard to believe we have crossed the halfway mark of Term 2. The winter chill has arrived, and with it, a busy period of assessments. This is the time of the term where our ākonga need to dig deep, put their heads down, and really focus on their studies.
Just a reminder that we do have clear procedures regarding missed assessments or extensions due to illness. We usually ask for a medical certificate to support the application, but appreciate that this is sometimes not possible. In such cases, students should initially contact our Principal’s nominee, Rachel Roberts (rroberts@nghs.school.nz). Please note that holidays during term time, and leaving school early for the weekend are not approved reasons for missing an assessment.
Term 2 Reports for senior students will be issued in Week 8. These reports provide feedback on the key competencies: Managing Self, Relating to Others, and Participating and Contributing. The student’s standard of work is reported on, with all results for the year to date included. Teachers also provide individual comments in this report, with feed-forward and next steps for the year. (Junior students will receive a similar report early in Term 3).
Senior Parent-Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Monday 15 June. We will offer a mix of online interviews via the Google Meet platform (from 10:00am - 2:00pm) and in-person interviews (from 3:00pm - 6.30pm). Some Hostel parents who live far from school find the online option very useful. Monday 15 June will be a Learning from Home Day for our ākonga, booking an afternoon face-to-face interview is a great opportunity to return your rangatahi to the hostel at the same time. On this day, junior students will have work set in Google Classroom or the previous lesson to work on at home. Seniors have the day to work independently on their assessments.
As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s academic progress — you are welcome to contact me at cjohnson@nghs.school.nz
Ngā mihi

Kia ora koutou.
Over the past two weeks in the hostel, there has been plenty happening both on and off the sports field. It has been great to see strong results coming through in our winter sports teams, with students showing commitment, teamwork, and school spirit throughout the season.
Weekend girls have especially been enjoying Friday night bingo, which has quickly become a fun and popular way to spend the evening together. It has been awesome to see everyone getting involved and having a laugh.
As we head into the 4-day weekend, we hope everyone has a well-deserved rest and takes the opportunity to recharge. We look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed and ready for the remaining five weeks of school.

Netball Season
If you or someone else is collecting your daughter from the netball courts on Saturday, please email the hostel office no later than midday on Thursday so we can arrange the transport. Ngā mihi.
7-day Boarders
For planning purposes, it is very helpful if our 7-day boarders can let us know by 9.00am each Thursday if they will be away for the weekend. This greatly assists our kitchen team with accurate meal planning and helps us avoid unnecessary food preparation and wastage.
Kindo Reminder
Please make sure you've logged into Kindo to pay for your daughter's school-related charges such as sports fees, music tuition and other activities.
Contact hostelfinance@nghs.school.nz if you have any questions regarding your hostel account.
Sickness
If you're feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, please stay home and take the time you need to recover. Your health and the health of others comes first.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office - preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will have toast and spreads made available to you. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff go to considerable effort to cater for your needs.
