Kia ora whānau.
This week has been tino ngahau (so much fun) as we’ve celebrated Te Wiki o te Reo Māori together at Hewett House.
Alongside enjoying some kai such as steamed pudding cooked in a can, potato bread, seafood salad, and mussels, we’ve also been adding more reo into our daily lives. A huge mihi to Whaea Te Aroha, who has been teaching us a kupu o te rā (word of the day) and creating ātaahua (beautiful) and tino pai (really cool) posters to brighten our hostel walls.
It’s been wonderful to hear the girls giving new kupu a try, sharing phrases with each other, and adding to the warm whānau atmosphere we are so proud of here at Hewett House.
Ka pai e te whānau — kia kaha, keep up the great mahi!
We wish you all an enjoyable school holiday. Hopefully the weather continues to shine — it makes such a difference when the sun is out!
A friendly reminder: it is really important that we know by Monday 6 October if your daughter will not be returning to Hewett House in 2026. This allows us to plan ahead and offer places to new boarders who are waiting for the opportunity to join our community.
Study leave paperwork for our Year 11, 12, & 13 ākonga has been sent out via email. It would be much appreciated if you could complete the Google doc and return by Monday 6 October at the latest. It is important that we know what your daughter's movements will be over the study period and when to expect her in the hostel.
Stay safe, enjoy the break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for Term 4.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark

As we come to the end of another hugely busy term, we wish all our rangatahi a safe and restful holiday period. With sports, Winter Tournament and Derived Grade exams filling the calendar over the last few weeks, everyone has earned the chance to pause and recharge.
These holidays are also an ideal time for students to take some small but important steps towards preparing for externals – tidying up notes, completing outstanding work, and setting themselves up for study next term. A little organisation now will go a long way when revision time arrives.
It is also Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - the 50th anniversary, no less. We encourage our hostel whānau to celebrate by using some simple phrases over the break:
· Kia pai tō hararei – Have a good holiday
· Haere haumaru – Travel safely
· Kia kaha te ako – Keep up the learning
· Kia pai te wā ki tō whānau – Enjoy time with your family
I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved balance of rest, whānau time, and preparation for the term ahead.
- Ms Amanda Johnson (Mandy)
Kia Ora!
Happy Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week! This past week, ākonga have enjoyed taking part in activities celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. On the food front, the school and hostel Kāhui prepped and sold a delicious hāngi at the start of the week. To further satisfy the taste buds, we've explored some new and exciting foods at mealtimes like traditional Māori bread. Thanks to the kitchen staff for making this happen! To complete the week, our Hostel Kāhui group attended a relaxing afternoon at the beach where they bonded, reflected on the year, celebrated achievements and shared their ideas for 2026, finishing with a scrumptious trip to Lick This for some ice cream. It’s safe to say the week has been a great success, full of appreciation for Māori culture and language.
In the past few newsletters, we have mentioned the Year 13s competing in cone challenges with Napier Boys’, but we’ve realised that some of you might not know what a cone challenge actually is. It’s exactly what it sounds like, we have a blue road cone, and we compete against each other in different sports/games to win it. It is a tradition that has been happening for many years; these challenges happen throughout the year and are organised by the students. It is a great way to stay connected with Scinde House while also adding fun and friendly competition to what is often a busy year. We are proud to say that we have won 3 out of 4 challenges this year!

Can you believe we’ve already reached the end of Term 3? The past few weeks have been full on, rounding off what has been a positive and productive term. With the warmer weather rolling in, we've all loved getting outdoors in the afternoons, and those sunny mornings have been a real bonus!
We are sure that everyone is looking forward to the upcoming holidays. This is a well earned break for all and a chance to recharge before diving into another exciting term at the Hostel.
As we head into the final stretch of the year, there’s plenty to look forward to. Next term is shaping up to be full of exciting events and activities, including the annual Hostel Talent Show! Start thinking about your acts over the break... we can't wait to see what everyone brings to the stage.
Enjoy your well deserved holiday. We look forward to seeing you all back in Term 4!
Illness
If you're feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, please stay home and take the time you need to recover. Your health — and the health of others — comes first.
Change to 5 / 7 Day Status
If your daughter is wanting to change her boarding status ie to 5 day or 7 day this needs to come to the Hostel Manager in writing please.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs. Once again, thank you for your support.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will be able to have toast and spreads. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings. Thanks for your support with this.
We love celebrating successes at Hewett House.
If you have some news (and/or photos) we would love to hear about it so we can include it in future pānui editions :)
