Welcome back to Term 3!
Kia ora whānau,
A warm (and much needed!) welcome back to Term 3 from all of us at Hewett House. Winter has certainly settled in, so we’re encouraging the girls to stay wrapped up, eat well, and look after their health during these colder months. Please remind them to reach out if they’re feeling unwell — we’re here to help.
The term is already off to an exciting start, with Year 12 and 13 students attending the pre-Ball and School Ball. It was wonderful to see them looking fabulous and creating lasting memories together—there was a real buzz around the hostel as dresses, suits, and plans came together!
We’re looking forward to a busy and productive term filled with learning, laughter, and plenty more Hewett House moments.
I always value your input and support — whether you're a parent, guardian, or friend of our boarding community. If you have any concerns, feedback, or would just like to drop by for a visit, please don’t hesitate to call, email, or pop in. We’d love to hear from you.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark

Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to the new term. Term 3 is where ākonga really need to roll their sleeves up and put in the hard mahi, culminating for seniors in Derived Grade Examinations in Weeks 5 and 6.
Many students attended our Study Skills seminar with expert Patrick Sheratt this week, and all Year 11 students will also have lessons on Study Skills in their e-period classes on Fridays.
10 tips on how to study effectively
While there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach when it comes to studying effectively, there are methods you can use to improve your recall and long-term memory. Remember: everyone has different learning techniques. What works for other students may not work for you. Just keep trying until you discover the best way to study.
1. Get organised
Use a diary/planner to keep track of current assignment deadlines.
Bring all the material and devices you need to class, so you can participate. You may find it helpful to pack your bag the night before, so you’re ready to go first thing in the morning.
2. Don’t skip class!
3. Take notes
Make study notes, which include visual aids like flow charts and mind maps to help simplify information.
4. Talk to your teacher and ask questions
5. Space out your studying
If you break up your study load over several days, you’ll retain information far more readily than if you crammed in one long session.
6. Create a study plan – and stick to it
7. Don’t just re-read but study
When you are reading and re-reading texts and notes, you’re not studying. This is because you’re not engaging with the material.
Instead of reading, try:
creating concept maps and diagrams, and Quizlet (flashcard) sets for key terms and vocabulary
explaining concepts to yourself step by step
formulating questions and problems that you can come back to and solve, effectively creating a quiz for yourself
becoming a teacher or tutor to your study group or partner and learning the course material by explaining concepts to them.
8. Set up a quiet study space
9. Test yourself
Getting someone to quiz you – or quizzing yourself – is great retrieval practice. You might find it helpful to create flashcards each time you learn a new topic. This learning technique helps you commit information to your long-term memory and easily retrieve it when needed.
10. Find a study buddy or join a study group

Kia ora.
Welcome back everyone! I trust that we all had a restful and well deserved break.
We jumped straight into a busy first week back. On Wednesday, we headed down to the Municipal Theatre where we were very lucky to be able to watch the NBHS/NGHS Footloose musical. It was an incredible performance, huge congratulations to all the hostel girls involved. You made us proud!
And of course, Saturday brought one of the most anticipated events of the year, the Ball! Everyone looked absolutely gorgeous and the hostel was beautifully decorated. A big thank you to Mrs Clark for transforming the hostel into a stunning space and to the hostel staff for an amazing pre-ball. It was a fun-filled night that we are all sure to remember!
I believe that the seniors are busy studying for the upcoming derived grade exams. Otherwise have a great weekend and stay warm.

DIRECT DEBITS
To reduce the workload for our finance team could you please ensure there are sufficient funds in your bank account so that boarding fee direct debits can be processed successfully on the 20th of each month.
SCHOOL CHARGES - KINDO IS COMING
From Monday 4 August the School is implementing Kindo which is a student payment system. This is only for your daughter's school charges such as sports fees, music tuition and other activities. Boarding fees and hostel incidentals should continue to be paid using your normal method.
The option to include your school charges with your boarding fee direct debit will no longer be available.
School uniform will need to be paid for before collection.
More information will be provided closer to the Kindo launch date.

A Quick Reminder
If you're feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, please stay home and take the time you need to recover. Your health — and the health of others — comes first.
Change to 5 / 7 Day Status
If your daughter is wanting to change her boarding status ie to 5 day or 7 day this needs to come to the Hostel Manager in writing please.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will be able to have toast and spreads. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings. Thanks for your support with this.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs. Once again, thank you for your support.
Over the holidays, Kaela and I had the opportunity to represent the East Coast at the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Competition in Invercargill. After a successful run at regionals, we were both excited—and a little nervous—to head down south.
We kicked things off with a one-hour exam challenging our agricultural knowledge through multiple-choice questions, short answers, and a maths and essay section. Safe to say, we felt a bit fried after that one.
The next morning we had an early (and frosty) start for our practical day. As the sun rose, we launched into the farmlet — a two-hour task where we had to construct a three-wire electric fence, install rails and a temporary gate, plumb a trough, riparian plant natives, and complete a soil test. Various trough parts being frozen together didn’t make for the easiest start, but as the day warmed up, so did we. Although I’ll admit the fencing with cold fingers was a bit subpar (sorry Kaela).
Early on we rotated through seven 15 minute long modules from sponsors such as FMG, Milwaukee, or Massey University. We were judged on our knowledge and practical skills in areas ranging from assembling a chainsaw or fire break using native plants to giving a presentation on farmers' mental health. After the modules, we returned to the farmlet to finish our tasks and deliver a speech on the upcoming technology in farming.
It was a good feeling to finally scrub off the mud and scrub up for the evening show. After some anticipation, we were thrilled to be named in the top five (meaning my fencing mustn’t have been that bad). This earned us a spot in the face-off: a quick buzzer round covering general agricultural and horticultural knowledge. After six intense rounds, we were glad the pressure was off and we happily indulged in the lolly stand.
In the end, Kaela and I were proud to win the exam, speech and face-off and I was lucky to come away with competitor of the year. To top it all off we were pretty chuffed to place second overall in the country. A huge thank you to both of our families who supported us along the way.
