1. Breathing Exercises
Try the 4-7-8 technique:
Inhale for 4 seconds.
Hold for 7 seconds.
Exhale for 8 seconds.
Repeat 4–5 times.
2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Slowly tense and release each muscle group from head to toe.
Helps reduce physical tension and focus the mind.
3. Visualization or Guided Imagery
Imagine a calming scene (like a beach or forest).
4. Aromatherapy
Lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood essential oils can promote calm.
Use a little on your pillow.
I hope all our whānau enjoyed a restful school holiday break and appreciated the chance to have your rangatahi home.
Our kaiako are looking forward to meeting the parents and caregivers of our Year 9 and 10 students at the upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews on Wednesday 14 May. You should have received information about how to make bookings. For hostel whānau, there is the option to join via video conference, which many find helpful.
In Week 4, our Year 10 ākonga will be sitting the Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs). These assessments will also be available to Year 11 students who are still working towards these credits. Our English and Mathematics Learning Areas are focused on preparing students thoroughly.
As a reminder, from 2024 onwards, all learners must achieve 10 credits in both Literacy and Numeracy in order to gain any NCEA qualification. These can be achieved through the CAAs or through tagged achievement standards within subject areas. Thanks to these multiple opportunities, by the end of 2024, fewer than 15 Year 11 students had not yet gained either component — a positive sign that most students are well on track.
We did hold an information evening about NCEA, including the Literacy and Numeracy co-requisites, at school at the start of the April. If you missed it, there is a recording available on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2909066775939146
As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s academic progress — you can reach me at ajohnson@nghs.school.nz.

Kia ora. Welcome back.
I hope everyone had a well rested holiday! As we head into Autumn, the weather starts to get colder, so don’t forget to wear your jackets and cardigans to school and stay warm.
Now, with the winter sports season finally here, many of our boarders will be busy. For those playing, be sure not to get injured and enjoy it to the fullest. A big thank you to all the teachers, coaches, supporters and whānau who make winter sports possible!
Make the most of this term by keeping the energy up and trying to get through it without catching a cold!
- Chimari, Kaela and Georgia

Change to 5 / 7 Day Status
If your daughter is wanting to change her boarding status ie to 5 day or 7 day this needs to come to the Hostel Manager in writing please.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will be able to have toast and spreads. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings. Thanks for your support with this.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs. Once again, thank you for your support.
