Nau mai haere mai.
Winter sports trials are well underway with girls darting off in all directions. It is great to see the effort and passion they have for their known sports and even more for those trying something different. With so many different sports offered our ākonga are spoilt for choice. After school tennis lessons will also be on offer next term.
If you wish to change your daughter's boarding status for next term due to winter sports please let me know by email before the end of the term please.
Interviews for our Year 9 cohort for 2026 are nearly complete, and we are looking forward to our Hewett House Open Day on Friday 4 April.
We have introduced a student suggestion box. We continually review how we can operate Hewett House to provide the best experience for your rangatahi. I would welcome any emails should you have any ideas.
Please remember that we have staff at the hostel awake 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so you can always call if you have any concerns or worries, to get an adult set of eyes/point of view. My door is always open.
Ngā mihi nui,

Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will be able to have toast and spreads. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings. Thanks for your support with this.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs. Once again, thank you for your support.
Food is often the one thing that is commented on by our boarders so I thought I would run through what was on offer last Tuesday:
Breakfast
Waffles with bacon and maple syrup
Coco Pops, Weet-Bix, Nutri-Grain, Rice Bubbles, hand made muesli and chocolate granola
Canned peaches and apricots
Pots of yoghurt
Fresh pears, apples, bananas and nectarines
Morning Tea
M&M biscuit
Bags of popcorn
Fresh pears, apples, bananas and nectarines
Lunch
Sticky Korean chicken with rice, fresh lettuce salad and coleslaw, beetroot
Fresh pears, apples, bananas and nectarines
Dinner
Roast lamb with creamy potato bake, broccoli and carrots
Afternoon Tea
Baked slice and fruit
Supper
Baked slice and fruit and hot Milo
If our rangatahi take up all the opportunities to participate with the menu I’m sure you'll agree they are offered a great variety of healthy food.
We have introduced a new tradition at Hewett House.
Every Friday evening the girls will be expected to join each other in the dining room for a game of Bingo.
Of course, there are prizes for when you win a line and also the first to get their card filled up!
Thanks to Jess for being our caller
Netsafe is New Zealand’s independent, non-profit online safety charity. Taking a technology-positive approach to the challenges digital technology presents, they work to help people in New Zealand take advantage of the opportunities available through technology by providing practical tools, support and advice for managing online challenges. Netsafe keep people of all ages safe online by providing free support, advice and education seven days a week.
Netsafe can assist you in getting content removed from some places online and talk to you about the other options available to you – for example, taking the case to the Police. If someone is threatening to share nude images/videos of you or blackmailing you, we can also let you know what you can do about it. Our team talks to people in situations like this every day, so we’re used to talking about it and can provide you all the information you need.
There are apps that can help too, like Take it Down takeitdown.ncmec.org
This is an anonymous tool for anyone under 18 to get your intimate image or video removed from social media, including Facebook.
Being away from your rangatahi is undoubtedly challenging in different ways. To help our whānau stay connected with what is happening at school, both in specific classes and in the wider life of the school, we offer a range of online applications.
Our kura is a Google school, so all ākonga will have a Google Classroom for each of their timetabled subjects, and sometimes for other groups as well, such as their Dean’s Classroom for their year level. Classroom has a “Guardian Invite” feature, which automatically invites caregivers to join, using the email address the school holds. This allows you to see what work is being set and assessments that are coming up.
Caregivers also have access to a lot of information through the SchoolBridge app. It combines functions like permission slips, access to reports, subject selection, bookings for parent-teacher interviews and reporting absences all in one. SchoolBridge also allows easy access to the Kamar Portal to check results and locate past reports. If you have yet to download this app, instructions are here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10SrA50GPWnxmoBNHfjiLyVzTTG-zi6u4ACkxdq4wZPo/edit?usp=sharing
As well as this newsletter, and the school newsletter, which both come out fortnightly in alternating weeks, there is also lots of great news and photos on our social media. Please follow us on our official school Facebook and Instagram pages also, and of course, the hostel has its own Facebook page.

Having just completed week 9, it feels as if the term has gone by pretty fast! The hostel has been a hive of activity with winter sports trials beginning and after school activities in full swing. This week many girls have been participating in Summer Tournament week. Well done to all of you!
We look forward to welcoming new whānau to the Hostel Open Day coming up next Friday.
Many of the senior students are completing their internals and assessments at this time. We wish you all the best!
Hopefully everyone has a restful weekend and is ready for another busy week ahead.
