Nau mai haere mai.
It is hard to believe that we are at the end of February. Our boarders have settled in well to life at Hewett House. School activities are up and running and it is great to see so many of our boarders involved.
The school swimming sports aka 'splash and dash' was a wonderful occasion for dressing up in House colours.
Our rangatahi have also completed the 2025 Hewett House swimming sports alongside a visit to Napier Boys' High School. It's all go!
Please remember, if there is something that you would like to chat about, my door is always open - and whānau please don’t forget that we have staff at the hostel awake 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so you can always call to get an adult set of eyes / point of view.
Wishing you all the best for the next few weeks.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark

Change to 5 / 7 Day Status
If your daughter is wanting to change her boarding status ie to 5 day or 7 day this needs to come to the Hostel Manager in writing please.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will have toast and spreads made available to you. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs.
With the first few weeks behind us, it's time to get stuck into the mahi. Teachers have spent time getting to know their classes and establishing routines and expectations, and now the real work begins.
Hostel students should be making the most of their prep sessions each evening. During prep last week, I was particularly impressed by the quiet focus of the new Year 9s. All students were engaged in their work, making good use of this valuable study time.
Students should prioritise completing any unfinished classwork from the day, followed by set home learning and assessment tasks. Beyond this, they should revise key vocabulary, concepts, or rules from the day’s lessons. If all work is complete, reading is an excellent way to use the remaining time productively.
For those keen to read, we have a wonderful school library open at lunchtime and after school. The Hewett House Rec Room also has a selection of popular books, and students can access e-books via the Wheelers platform - no need to leave their seats! https://nghsnz.wheelers.co/
Our Year 9s have had a fantastic start, immersing themselves in their transition activities last week. They learned about our school’s culture and values before heading off for sun, water, and adventure at Guthrie Smith Outdoor Education Centre.
Some of our favourite Term 1 events are still to come - Swimming Sports this week, followed by Athletics in Week 7. New students, make sure you have your costumes in your house-colours ready!
Please contact me if you have any queries regarding the academic progress of your rangatahi - email ajohnson@nghs.school.nz or phone 835 1069 ext 213.

Kia ora.
We’ve all enjoyed settling back into hostel these past few weeks. We started our term off with a bang at the hostel swimming sports on Tuesday last week. After some tight racing, blue house won the relay and came out on top for our first house event of the year!
Monday this week we attended the bonding night at Napier Boys'. It was great to reconnect with our brother school after the summer break and nice for the Year 9s to meet new faces. We enjoyed a fun swim, slip 'n slide and games before finishing off the night with some scrummy chicken burgers. Thank you to Napier Boys' High School for having us.
We had the swimming sports championships and ‘splash and dash’ on Wednesday to finish off a busy week. What a lot of fun!
Enjoy your weekend.

Message from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora:
The Meningococcal B (MenB vaccine), and Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccines are available for free to rangatahi aged 13-25 years who are entering (or who are in) their first year of close living situations including boarding schools, youth justice facilities, university halls of residence and military barracks.
The Meningoccoal vaccines are free for rangatahi for up to three months before moving in and during their first year in close living situations. Rangitahi will require a single dose of the MenACWY vaccine and two doses of the MenB vaccine given 8 weeks apart. The MenACWY and first dose of MenB vaccines can be given at the same time.
To get the best available protection against this preventable disease, rangatahi should be fully immunised against Meningococcal disease before moving into the close living facility.
Whānau can receive their immunisations from many community health providers including many pharmacies. Visit Book a vaccine to find a suitable immunisation site.
We love celebrating successes at Hewett House. If you have some news (and/or photos) we would love to hear about it so we can include it in future pānui editions :)
