Kia ora koutou katoa from Hewett House

Tēnā koutou katoa.

It was a privilege to spend Sunday evening chatting over the dinner table at the Year 9 whānau dinner. It is such a good opportunity for whānau to get to know their daughters' friends and to meet other families. we will be hosting our Year 10 whānau for dinner in August.

On Monday we  said farewell to Hanna Amner who has been working as a Matron since the beginning of the year. We wish her well. We have appointed a new member of staff who will be starting till next term, so Mrs Min Clark will be filling in for us in the meantime. Min is one of our long standing staff members who works in a relieving capacity these days. All the girls already know Mrs Clark so it will be a smooth transition for the coming weeks.

Our ākonga will be getting the opportunity to purchase a Hewett House hostel hoodie with their name printed on the lower back. The hoodies are Origin brand and are a cosy 300 gsm weight 80% cotton and 20% recycled polyester, with a soft brushed inside. Caregiver permission is needed before they are ordered as they will be charged to your school account. The link includes a size guide and colours that are available to order

As we get nearer to Matariki and the holidays, it is time to reflect upon the term - I am always interested in your opinion as parents, so please be in contact with me if there is anything you would like to discuss.

Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori.

Michele Glogoski - Weekend Supervisor

Hi everyone, I've worked here for a good few years now and love watching your kōtiro grow, mature, and develop into awesome young women. I also enjoy holidaying and travelling.

Michelle McLellan - Overnight Supervisor

I am new to the Hewett House team as an overnight  supervisor. For the past 5 years I have run my own dog grooming business. Previous to that, I worked in a local High School for 16 years. In my role, I don’t get to meet many of the girls, but I am delighted that I am here for them and able to help keep them safe.

Joan Willox - Morning Supervisor

I am Joan, the new morning hostel supervisor. I came to NZ from Scotland 17 years ago with my husband Richard and our 4 boys. The boys have all grown and moved out now and have been replaced by a dog, two cats, six calves and three chickens. After living in Havelock North for 16 years, we have recently moved to a more rural property near Bay View.  We are loving the space and the beautiful views. I am really enjoying it here at Hewett House and it's lovely getting to know all the girls and staff. Hopefully soon I will remember everyone's name.

Hostel Academic Dean Update

Reports for senior students will be issued in week 9. These provide feedback on the key competencies of: managing self;  relating to others; and participating and contributing. The student’s standard of work is reported on, with all results for the year to date included. Teachers also provide individual comments in this report, with feed-forward and next steps for the year. (Junior students receive this type of report early in term 3).

Parent-Teacher Interviews - Monday July 1, 2024

We will offer a mix of online interviews via the Google Meet platform (from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm) and in-person interviews (from 3-6.30 pm). Some Hostel parents who live far from school find the online option very useful.  Monday is a Distance Learning Day for our ākonga, so if you would like a kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) interview, you can schedule one for the afternoon, and return your rangatahi to the Hostel at the same time! On this day, junior students will have work set in Google Classroom or the previous lesson to work on at home. Seniors have the day to work independently on their internals.

For any parents/caregivers who want to meet our guidance counsellors, please email for an appointment.

Robyn Kloosterman: rkloosterman@nghs.school.nz or Amanda Greville agreville@nghs.school.nz

All reports and results are available via the Parent Portal. Links to the portal are also emailed to all whānau, so please be sure to keep your current email address updated at the school office.

If you have any concerns or questions raised by your child’s report, please contact me or the appropriate year-level dean.

Heads of Hostel Update

Kia ora everyone,

We can’t believe we are already in week 8! Our girls have been very busy with a large number of sporting, music, and cultural events in full swing. Over the last few weeks we have had a number of students taking part in the Big Sing and Chamber Music competitions. Next week the Kapa Haka students are off to Nelson to compete in the Kapa Haka Nationals, which we will get to see livestreamed at school.

All of these events are a great way for the girls to get involved and make lifetime memories. Matariki is approaching next week and we have some exciting things planned in the hostel to celebrate. With the end of term nearing and internals being due, these times can get a bit stressful, but keep up the good mahi.

- Erica, Ella and Lucinda

Last week in the hostel we ate 80kg of manderins, bananas, apples, and pears!
