Kia ora koutou katoa from Hewett House
Tēnā koutou katoa.
It’s been another busy two weeks at Hewett House since our last newsletter with lots of winter sports and seasonal illness, which has at times resulted in your daughter having to be collected. We thank you for your support with this.
I was fortunate to spend last week at the NZ Boarding School Hui in Auckland. We had an amazing array of speakers and I will be sharing that info with you over the next couple of newsletters.
In the next couple of weeks our ākonga will be getting the opportunity to purchase a Hewett House Hostel hoodie with their name printed on the lower back.
The hoodies are Origin brand and are a cosy 300 gsm weight 80% cotton and 20% recycled polyester, with a soft brushed inside.
Caregiver permission is needed before they are ordered as they will be charged to your school account. We will send out more information including a size guide and colours via a link soon.
It is hard to believe that we have passed the half term mark. Wishing you all the best for the next few weeks.

Reminders
Weekend plans need to be submitted by Thursday morning via Orah, email or text. This is really important for us as we head into the Winter season as boarders are moving around more with sports.
Rangatahi can go to watch their friends play sports but need prior permission from caregivers.
Name all belongings as this makes things much easier for the laundry.
All electrical items - including laptop charges and phone chargers - need to be electrically tagged as a matter of health and safety.

Our congratulations to Helen Thompson who has been drawn as the winner of the firewood raffle. The winning ticket was sold by Madi Hunt.
More than 500 tickets were sold raising over $1800! A huge thank you to the Broad family for donating the wood.
Thank you to everyone for their support purchasing the tickets which will help the girls purchase some club polos.
Hostel Academic Dean Update
The temperature is starting to drop, and the number of COVID cases and other seasonal illnesses is rising.
Just a reminder that we do have clear procedures in place for students who are missing NCEA assessments or are requesting an extension because of illness. We do usually ask for a medical certificate to support the application, but appreciate that this is sometimes not possible, in which case students need to communicate in the first instance with our Principal’s Nominee Rachel Roberts (rroberts@nghs.school.nz). For students who are absent due to COVID-19 we would expect this positive result to be logged on your My Health Record and for the absence notification to us to clearly state COVID.
Student health and wellbeing is a priority and if your daughter is symptomatic and unwell please keep her home from school.
Please email me at ajohnson@nghs.school.nz if you have any concerns about the academic progress of your child.

Heads of Hostel Update
Kia ora everyone!
We hope you have had a great long weekend. We have had another few eventful weeks filled with fun.
We finished last week off with Whakataetae which is a house competition at school. It was incredible to watch and see everyone getting involved in the house spirit.
The combined quiz night with the Scinde House Year 13s was an interesting night filled with questionable answers and lots of laughter, resulting in the boys winning the cone challenge once again. The juniors also enjoyed a school quiz night down at NBHS last week with a few of them winning prizes!
The Year 11 students also had a formal dance with NBHS at school, which they all thoroughly enjoyed. The Kapa Haka girls are in full swing with practices as nationals is right around the corner at the end of the month.
We are also looking forward to the ball next term as we begin to plan for the pre-ball hosted at the hostel. Tickets are able to be purchased now and we look forward to seeing you all at the pre ball.
Lastly, keep up the good mahi at school - we are already over halfway through this term! Keep an eye out in the next couple of weeks as we launch our Hostel merch.
