Kia ora koutou katoa from Hewett House

Tēnā koutou katoa.

Welcome, Hostel whānau, to Term 2 - the busiest term sportswise!

We currently have boarders participating in netball, hockey, soccer, rugby, dancing and swimming. Obviously, with so many sports being accessed by so many rangatahi, our minivan is usually at capacity. Consequently, taxi cards will be used far more often this term, so please check with your daughters as to their taxi card usage as we don’t want the end of term charges to be a shock for you.

With netball on a Saturday, a number of whānau are opting to have their daughters stay in on Friday night and then collecting them from the courts on Saturday. We have engaged the services of Pink Total Transport to provide transportation to and from the netball courts. They will collect all our netballers at around 7.15am from the Hostel. Those girls returning to the Hostel will spend the morning together and return by bus at the end of their netball. The cost of these buses will be passed onto you on your account. We will need to hear from you if you are going to collect your daughter from the netball courts via an Orah pass or email.

1. During the two Winter terms, your daughter may wish to stay in the Hostel on a Friday night to enable her to get to netball. These five-day girls will incur a charge for that night’s accommodation and meals.

2. We will require your permission by email/Orah request for any weekend night stay please.

3. Some whānau have opted to change to seven-day boarding for the Winter terms. These are girls involved in not only netball, but hockey and other sports as well. Please do let us know as soon as possible if this is an option for you so we can make the necessary arrangements. Please do not hesitate to give me a call if you are uncertain about any of these options.

Thank you for your feedback around the opening and closing times of the Hostel for Exeats and End of Term. We are going to trial a later hostel close of 6.00pm to enable families to collect girls at a more convenient time, please note that we will not be providing an evening meal for the later collections.

Introducing the Hewett House Team...

Joyce Clark

Hewett House Manager

I joined the Hewett House team in November 2023.

I have had various roles during my working life starting as a Florist and then mostly in  the not for profit sector. I have been working in the boarding space for 9 years.

I am the mother of three adult daughters. I cherish the opportunity to work with you all to support your daughter, so that together we can help her meet her challenges and celebrate her successes.

Sarah-Jane Lothian

Breakfast Matron & Administrator

I joined Hewett House in January 2024, and what I love most about working here is the great community we have with the girls and staff. I'm originally from bonnie Scotland, and moved to New Zealand with my partner last year. I'd never been here before December, so I spend my days off exploring Hawke's Bay and beyond. If you have any recommendations on what I should see next, I'd love to hear them!

Mary Beaumont

Weekend Matron

I am semi retired and live close to the beach in CHB. We moved to the area to be close to our son and mokopuna. Our daughter is living in Otago. When our children were growing up our house was full of dance and music activity. I trained as a Registered Nurse and worked at Otara Spinal unit and a busy  rural medical practice. I then retrained in Health and Safety to move into injury prevention in the meat and dairy industry. It is a privilege to be working at Hewett House and I enjoy spending time with your daughters.

We will introduce more of our staff in future newsletters.

Hostel Academic Dean Update

I hope all our whānau enjoyed the school holiday break, and a chance to have your rangatahi home.

Our kaiako are looking forward to meeting parents of our Year 9 and 10 students soon on Thursday, May 23. You should have received information on how to book these parent-teacher interviews. Hostel whānau may like to take advantage of an online video conference.

Also coming up in Week 4, is the Literacy/Numeracy CAAs (Common Assessment Activities). This will be sat by all Year 10 ākonga, and any Year 11 ākonga who still need to achieve these credits. The Mathematics and English Learning Areas are currently working on preparing your rangatahi for these assessments. From this year onwards, all learners must achieve 10 credits each in Literacy and Numeracy to achieve any NCEA qualification.

As always, do email me at ajohnson@nghs.school.nz if you have any concerns about the academic progress of your child.

Rural Health Careers Programme

On Wednesday 10 April I attended the Rural Health Careers Programme run at school for the hostel students interested in finding out more about career pathways within the health sector.

The professionals who spoke to us included Paramedics and Doctors, a Dentist, Dietitian and Optometrist. All of these people showed a true passion for their jobs.

A highlight for me was the opportunity to participate in some hands-on activities such as testing reflexes with the Doctors and measuring our strength with the Dietitian. It was all very interesting! I walked away with a new-found interest and understanding of career options within health that I had not considered before. I was inspired by their passion for their job and why more rural youth should choose a career in health!

I am very grateful for this experience and all that I learnt from it.

Heads of Hostel Update

Welcome back to Term 2 and another busy term we have ahead!

Winter sports, such as netball, hockey and rugby are up and running, of which we have large participation from our hostel girls. It is also a busy time in the arts and cultural departments as the girls prepare for Big Sing, Chamber Music and for Kapa Haka Nationals which all take place this term.

Over Term 1, the last week of the holidays and Week 1 of Term 2, we had a number of boarders involved in the school musical of Chicago (teen edition). The musical Chicago highlights the power and strength of women, and due to the large number of female participation, this modest version of the production was very fitting. The girls worked very hard, so it was a pleasure getting to witness their mahi on the opening night performance. All of this work paid off as the reviews for the show were some of the best yet. Comments such as, “this show could be on Broadway” and “these girls performed some serious topics very maturely” and “based on their talent, I never would have thought that these were only high school students”. These were just a few examples of the positive comments from people who came to watch the show.

All the best for the upcoming term.
