Kia ora koutou katoa from Hewett House

Tēnā koutou katoa.

Oh my goodness it is the end of Term 2, and the start of July already!

Last week we were so privileged to see our kapa haka group perform at the Nationals in Whakatū/Nelson. We are so proud of you all and the amazing perseverance you all showed with the long hours of practices, often leaving you with no voices and sore bodies. For us watching you on the screen it was all worthwhile, as you shone on the stage and made us proud.

Next term will be another busy one at Hewett House so keep an eye on the important dates. We would like to extend our gratitude for your support of Hewett House, working in collaboration in instrumental in providing the best for your daughter. We look forward to seeing you next term.

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa.

Let us keep close together, not far apart.

Wishing you and your whānau a very restful school holiday break with hopefully a little sunshine to warm our backs.

Ngā mihi nui,

Joyce Clark

Hostel Academic Dean Update

What a jam-packed term it’s been! Alongside all the hard mahi in the classroom, we have had so much going on outside the classroom too: sports exchanges, our amazing school show "Chicago", our kapa haka rōpū heading to nationals, the Big Sing, concerts, competitions, and the list goes on. While we are immensely proud of the superb results, full participation is the most impressive aspect. It has been lovely to see so many of our tauira getting involved, making friendships and special memories.

However, as respiratory illnesses and Covid continue to make an impact, there has also been a reasonable amount of absence of both staff and students.  Consequently, I wish all our hostel whānau a relaxing and refreshing break over the school holidays. It is time to recharge the batteries and spend time with friends and family, especially as the stars of Matariki rise in our winter sky. This is a special time of remembrance, joy, and peace.

Senior students should also spend some of their break time ensuring the term’s work is all tidied up in preparation for our derived grade examinations which begin in week 5 of next term. Organising their notes is a great place to start! Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Heads of Hostel Update

Kia ora everyone!

Wow, we’ve made it to the end of Term 2 already! Some exciting events have happened in the last couple of weeks including our kapa haka rōpū heading down to Nelson for the National Secondary Schools' Competition. The hostel girls who went worked extremely hard and showed resilience, making it through all the lengthy trainings. But it all paid off when we hit the national stage. The whole school joined in watching the livestream in the hall and everyone is so proud of the team.

We also had huge success with the Affordable Arts Exhibition with many of the hostel students helping out and many of our art pieces being purchased to be presented around the hostel.

We're so excited for the next term to come, we have many events planned. With the ball coming up in the first week, we have been doing lots of planning around the hostel preball, while also organising events for the junior year groups.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Thanks to our wonderful kitchen team who helped us celebrate Pride week with delicious cupcakes for morning tea!
