Mentor
Requirements:
The student will spend a total of three-six hours with their mentor over the course of the project.
The student will write and send a Thank You Note/Follow Up Note to their mentor. Note cards and stamps will be provided. See Mrs. Ihde.
The mentor cannot be a relative or a teacher or an employee at North Fayette Valley High School.
The mentor must be recognized as a knowledgeable person on the student's chosen topic.
Expectations:
Identify two or three possible mentors. If you need help, ask your advisor, the coordinators, or Principal Miller for assistance.
Contact the person and ask them if they will be your mentor.
Copy and send the Mentor Mentor Information Letter/Mentor Agreement Form and have them sign and return it.
Arrange a time to meet with your mentor. You are given one day of excused absence to do this if you choose.
Have a list of 5-10 open-ended questions to ask your mentor when you meet or speak with them, such as
How did you become knowledgeable about this topic?
What type of training or education did you have to acquire about this topic?
Would you recommend someone to pursue this area in the future? Why or why not?
After reading my paper or viewing my project, what sources, videos, or other information would you recommend including?
What advice would you offer a high school student interested in this area?
Share the Mentor Evaluation, with your mentor, ask them to complete it, and return it to Capstone Coordinator, Mrs. Ihde, or Principal, Mr. Miller.
Communication with your Mentor:
Face-to-face communication is ideal and should be done for some of the three-six hours if possible.
Phone conversations are acceptable and encouraged as well as Zoom or Google Meet.
Email or other online communication is okay but not as good as the above. (Each email the student sends and each reply received counts 15 minutes.)
Contact a high school secretary at least one day in advance of your mentor day for it to be excused.
