Careers Wheel Expo 2018 Wednesday 21st November 2018

Part of our Wellbeing programme includes discussion and consideration in the development of a career plan for each of our Secondary learners. When we talked to learners about this, they wanted to speak directly to professionals to understand their jobs, their field and how they spend their time in their workplace. Where better than to get our own parent community to come in and talk about their careers! The idea came from the learners and was driven by the learners.

We had 16 presenters, ranging from scientists, bakers, physiotherapists, accountancy, hospitality, diplomacy, design and technology and more for our inaugural event. The Expo was for our Secondary learners only, and all of them had an opportunity to contribute to the questions they wanted to have answered.

We are very proud of our Support 65 group of learners who masterminded this event and worked on the details to make it a useful and successful venture. Anjali Kumanan led the team, ably supported by Dhruv Sharma and Chester Chatfield. The rest of the group provided huge support on the day.

Tutorial Session

Last week, Year 13 learners were lucky enough to have an inspirational talk from business professional, Catherine Feldhausen from Microsoft. Catherine focussed on helping the learners create a positive and professional online profile to highlight their skills and service experiences, and help elevate their stories. A special thanks to Catherine for making the time to help the learners begin building their networks. We intend to support the learners to set up high quality professional profiles as they go on to University and beyond.

Staff visit Apple HQ!

Nexus Primary and Secondary Teachers took a trip over to the Apple HQ at One North last week to learn more about the ‘Everyone Can Create’ Curriculum offered by Apple to schools globally. 'Everyone Can Create' is a collection of project guides that brings creative expression to every subject. The projects in the 'Everyone Can Create' guides teach students to develop and communicate ideas through video, photography, music and drawing. And they help ignite creativity by giving teachers fun and meaningful ways to bring these skills into any lesson, topic or assignment.

In an informative but highly entertaining 2-hour workshop in the Apple Executive Boardroom, Nexus teachers built upon their already outstanding technology skills by exploring the curriculum using brand new iPad Pros and Apple Pencils. Music was composed in GarageBand on iPad, Digital Art was sketched in Sketches School, and even AR Video was edited in Clips! As the number of learners choosing iPads as computing devices increases in both Primary and Secondary these creative skills will be invaluable across the school to continue to ensure Nexus teaching is even more innovative and personalised for every learner.
