We had the pleasure of being invited to the FOBISIA World Music Festival hosted by Tanglin Trust School, Singapore. The festival spread over two consequence days 18-19 January bringing together 6 international schools from across Asia.
Our IGCSE and IB learners were involved in practical music making focusing on the examination requirements and areas of study which included; Gamelan Jazz fusion, African music, Caribbean Steel Pans, Folk Music from the British Isles and Latin American Bands. Workshops were led by leading musicians in the field and our learners had the chance to work alongside renowned Ethnomusicologist Bryon Wallen and the Havana Social Club.
The learner loved experiencing new music and being immersed amongst like-minded young musicians. Udit performed in the indigenous instrument concert and all of our learners performed in 4 concerts over the 2 days. The learners were also entertained by the Havana Social Club Band and participated in a Salsa lesson!
It was a great weekend of music making together. For video, click here!
Over the past year I have been aware that a number of our budding musicians are wanting to extend and enhance their learning of music through the ABRSM and Trinity Rock School examinations. The exams are set out to structure the learning of an instrument, to set practical goals and assess and celebrate achievement of progression. I have found these exams to work wonders with many learners!
To support our learners who are taking exams this term we held an informal recital for parents and learners so they had the opportunity to perform their pieces prior to the exam and build confidence in performing. Well done to our performers and good luck in your exams. For video, click here!
