This term seems to have flown by and it is now very apparent that Christmas is approaching fast given the huge amount of decorations and festive music around Singapore! However, we will all keep working hard right to the end of term whilst enjoying the spirit of Christmas and embracing the key messages of the season: those of giving and thinking of others, particularly those less fortunate than ourselves.
I am very proud of the huge amount of Service that has been carried out by our learners this semester and that will continue right up to the end - the Christmas Shoe Box Collection for the Singapore Food Heart charity has been really well organised by learners, teachers and the wonderful Mrs Sarah Wade in IT. The generosity of the community has been outstanding; the shoe boxes stacked in the School Reception will be delivered to needy families next week.
The Christmas Fair preparations are well under way and the Fair looks like being the usual mix of fun, games and opportunities for purchasing high quality gifts. Thanks to the NPG for the huge amount of work they have put into making this a success but they still need more help (go to their page here). On the same afternoon as the Fair the musicians will be leading Carols By Candlelight which is sure to be a very special experience.
The IGCSE and IB Options evening was well attended on Wednesday of this week and learners in Years 9 and 11 now need to consider their choices for the 2018/19 Academic Year. Year 11 and Year 13 learners have Trial Exams straight after the break, beginning on the first Monday of Term 3.
Various trips and other learning activities have taken place in the last fortnight including a History Trip to the National Museum, a Mapathon and the overnight NYAA trip to Pulau Ubin. Please see the Recent Events page for reports on these activities.
In order to hear the parent, learner and support staff voice on how Nexus could be a more inclusive international community, a consultation event asked those present how they thought we could better fulfil our mission to be Internationally Minded. Some great ideas were put forward, which will go into the production of an Action Plan in 2018. Here are two photos from the session:
Thanks to all those parents who attended the Feedback Friday event with the Principal - this was a really useful meeting and Judy enjoyed hearing what you had to say and we will respond accordingly.
Whilst mentioning parents I would like to pay tribute to Kerri Ames who is a staunch supporter of the school and has worked so hard for our community over the last few years. Kerri is returning to Australia with her family and we wish them all every success in their new adventures. We will also say goodbye to a few other learners and their families at this time of year and we thank them for what they have done and we hope that they will always carry a bit of Nexus with them wherever they may go.
There has been a continual flow of outstanding news coming from the swimming pool throughout this term but last weekend was particularly special: Paloma Canos became Women's National Champion in the 200m Butterfly. This does not mean just for her age group, Paloma is National Champion, open to women of all ages! Paloma is currently in Year 10. Massive congratulations to Paloma and to Ivan and to all her dedicated coaches and supporters. The Swim Team flew off to Bangkok for a huge weekend-long event this morning and we wish them every success. Please read all the Sports reports here.
This will be the last 'big' newsletter of the term so it remains for me to wish our Christian families a very Happy Christmas. I will leave you with this Christmas scene from the School Library which was created by our magnificent parent volunteers - thank you so much for all that you do!
