Bringing your own iPad to school is an exciting time for children but can be a daunting task for parents.
In order to set your child up for success, we recommend the following steps:
Before opening the box, create an essential agreement about the iPad. You can use the recommended template from Common Sense Media to discuss key responsibilities of owning an iPad with your child.
Become familiar with the child-safety features that Apple has available for families.
Enrol the iPad in Family Sharing with the 'Ask to Buy' feature turned on.
Download the required apps for Year 5 & 6. Only these approved apps are permitted for use during school hours. Additional non-school apps installed on BYOD devices are to be done so under parental discretion, but will not be permitted for use during school hours.
Families are encouraged to ensure their child's devices are ready for school by:
ensuring iPad and accessories are clearly named.
adding a sticker or decal for the case, headphones and pencil to make the device easily identifiable to the learner.
downloading and organising school apps (linked here) on the first page/s of the iPad home screen.
the learner's email and/or photo is featured prominently on the iPad’s lock screen (teachers are happy to assist with this).
A pouch for stylus to be securely stored on the iPad if the case does not have one.
Turn on ‘Find my iPad’ so that the device can be tracked if lost.
Update the device to the newest version of the software.
Turn on ‘Siri’ so your child can use voice commands.
Turn on ‘Background App Refresh’ to always have the most up to date version of apps.
Turn on international keyboards for your native language and the language that your child is studying at school (French or Chinese).
Set a passcode lock with your child and make sure you know the code.
