As our learners gear up for the Lenovo 2024 Hackathon, they recently had the exciting opportunity to attend a Master Class on Python Edge Computing, 3D modeling with Fusion 360, and Pitching 101, hosted by Lenovo. This hands-on workshop introduced them to edge computing, with a focus on leveraging technology to create smart, sustainable campuses and future-ready laptops. Using Python and OpenCV, they developed a face detection system to monitor room occupancy, improving resource management and reducing energy waste. The class also explored other innovative applications, such as automated attendance tracking and security systems, aimed at promoting sustainability.
In addition, the learners became acquainted with key tools, features, and functions of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) modeling in Fusion 360, learning how to create high-quality and realistic images of their designs. The Pitching 101 workshop covered the art of crafting compelling sales pitches, addressing crucial questions like "Why this?" and "How is this better?" Learners learned to create professional, impactful video pitches using visuals, text, and voiceovers to effectively convey their ideas.
This enriching experience has equipped our learners with essential skills, preparing them not only for the Lenovo Hackathon 2024 but also for future hackathons, while empowering them to leverage technology in creating a more sustainable future.
Our Year 13 learners are currently working on their university applications to the US, Canada, Hong Kong and the UK. 1:1 meetings with the learners have been ongoing during Term 1 and Ms Aine continues to hold weekly sessions with the whole year group on Friday mornings during reflection time. These sessions are proving to be an excellent opportunity for collaboration and discussions about application processes, key deadlines and any other information regarding university for our learners.

On Tuesday, members of the Learner Council welcomed Ms. Fiona Tye from Marketing and Admissions to discuss learners' contributions to the Christmas Fair. The Learner Council is buzzing with plans for this year’s Christmas Fair, and we have already come up with some amazing ideas for learner-led stalls! Picture this: live carnival-style games, a vibrant display of arts and crafts, and a showcase of the incredible projects Year 12 learners are creating for their Junior Achievement Award.
But that’s not all! Food and drink stalls are set to be a big hit too, with delicious treats and festive drinks to get everybody into the holiday spirit. We will have something for everyone.
