Talk Journaling app ("we," "us," "our," "Company") operates Talk Journal (the "App," "Talk"), a voice journaling application that lets you record, transcribe, and reflect on personal journal entries with the help of AI-powered transcription and summarization features.
This Privacy Policy explains what information Talk collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the rights and choices available to you. By using Talk, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
Talk is a personal journaling and reflection tool. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not designed to handle data the way a regulated healthcare service would (for example, it is not intended for use in a way that would make it subject to HIPAA or similar healthcare-specific regulations).

Content you create
Voice recordings — audio you record while journaling (up to 5 minutes per entry). Voice recordings may be considered biometric or voiceprint data under certain state laws (e.g., Illinois, Texas, Washington); we process this data only to provide the features described below, not for identification or surveillance purposes.
Transcripts — text generated automatically from your recordings, or text you type directly.
Mood tags — the mood/emoji you select for each entry.
AI-generated summaries and insights — if you use "Summarise with AI" or view mood insights, the resulting text generated from your entries.
Account information (if applicable) Talk does not currently require an account to use its core journaling features. If account creation is introduced in a future version (for example, to support cross-device sync), this section will be updated to describe the information collected at sign-up, such as an email address or sign-in method.
Subscription and purchase information If you subscribe to Talk Premium, your purchase is processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and managed through our subscription provider, RevenueCat. We receive confirmation of your purchase, your subscription status, and an anonymous identifier linking the purchase to your device. We never receive your full payment card details.
Usage and device information
App interaction data (features used, streaks, session activity).
Device type, operating system version, and language/locale.
Crash logs and diagnostic data.
Permissions
Microphone — required to record voice journal entries.
Speech recognition — required to convert your recordings into text. [Apple's on-device/cloud Speech Recognition framework and/or a third-party speech-to-text provider — confirm final implementation.]
Notifications — optional, used only to send journaling reminders.
Talk does not request access to your contacts, photos, or location.
We use the information above to:
Provide the core journaling experience (recording, transcription, calendar/history view).
Generate AI summaries and mood insights where you've chosen to use those features.
Maintain streaks and send reminders you've opted into.
Process your Premium subscription and manage entitlements via RevenueCat.
Diagnose and fix bugs, and improve the App.
Respond to support requests.
We do not use your journal content for advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles from it.
When you record an entry, your audio is sent to [speech-to-text provider — e.g., Apple's Speech Recognition service] to generate a text transcript.
Voice data is processed solely to generate your transcript. [If the transcription provider only holds audio temporarily rather than retaining it, state that explicitly here once confirmed.]
Your original audio recording is retained within the App, so you can play it back, until you delete that entry or delete all of your data.
Audio is not used for voice-identification, advertising, or any purpose beyond providing transcription and playback.
Talk's "Summarise with AI" and mood/pattern insights features are powered by third-party AI providers [name(s) to be confirmed — e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic]. When you use these features, the relevant text (not your raw audio) is sent to these providers to generate a summary or insight, which is returned to you within the App.
These providers act as our data processors and are authorized only to use your content to return the requested result — not to train their own general-purpose models, except where their own terms specify otherwise. [Confirm against the actual data-use terms of whichever AI vendor is selected before publishing.] If you'd prefer not to have your entries processed by these features, you can simply not use "Summarise with AI" or mood insights — the rest of the App works without them.
If you use mood insights or AI summaries, Talk analyzes your journal entries to identify patterns, moods, and themes over time and present them back to you. These insights are generated for your own reflection, are visible only to you, and are not shared externally or used for marketing.
We do not sell your personal information or your journal content.
We share information only with:
Service providers who help us operate Talk, including speech-to-text/AI providers, cloud hosting and backup providers (for Premium "secure backup"), RevenueCat for subscription management, and analytics/crash-reporting tools.
App store platforms (Apple, Google) for processing payments and managing subscriptions.
Legal authorities, only where required by law, to enforce our Terms, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or the public.
A successor entity, in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets — subject to this Privacy Policy or one offering equivalent protections.
We never share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
Journal entries (audio, transcripts, summaries) are kept for as long as your data exists in the App, or until you delete them.
You can delete a single entry ("Delete this entry") or wipe everything at once ("Delete All Data") from Settings. Deleting an entry permanently removes its voice recording and text — this cannot be undone.
Free-tier history and backup limits are described in the App; Premium removes these limits. [Confirm exact retention window for free-tier history.]
Diagnostic and aggregated usage data may be retained separately, for a limited period, in a form not linked back to your specific journal content.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
Access the personal data we hold about you.
Correct inaccurate data.
Delete your data (you can also do this directly in the App).
Receive a copy of your data in a portable format.
Object to or restrict certain processing.
Withdraw consent, where processing relies on consent (e.g., optional AI features).
Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, without discrimination for exercising these rights. (Talk does not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.)
If you are in the European Economic Area or UK, these rights are provided under the GDPR/UK GDPR, and you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you have rights under your state's comprehensive privacy law, generally including the rights listed above.

Talk is available worldwide. Because our service providers — including AI/speech-to-text and cloud hosting providers — may process data outside your country of residence, your information may be transferred internationally, including to the United States. Where required for transfers from the EEA/UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses with our processors.
Talk is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them without parental consent. If we learn that we've collected personal information from a child under 13 without such consent, we will promptly delete it. Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided us with personal information can contact us at app.talk@nextstack.org to request deletion.
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest where supported by our storage providers, and access controls limiting who can reach your data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
The App may contain links to third-party websites or services (for example, social sharing). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties; please review their policies separately.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by other reasonable means before they take effect. The "Last Updated" date above reflects the most recent revision.
