Friday 14th October 2022
I wanted to start by thanking those parents who took the time to respond to the recent family survey. Your feedback is always very important to us as it provides us with an insight into the opinions of those within our community. Generally, the feedback we have received has been very positive. I will share further information about this in a letter to you this week. In the meantime, for those families who do not feel that they know what their children are learning this term, please remember to check the school website for information.
Please support your child with their science and geography topics as well as reading with them regularly.
As you will be aware, we are due to close for the halfterm holiday at 3.30pm on Friday 21st October. We will then reopen the school gates at 8.45am on Monday 31st October. We recently sent you a letter with updated term dates for the terms ahead. Please remember that the term dates for 2022/23 are available on the school website. They can also be seen here. Our administrative team are always available to provide you with any information.
Thank you to those families who turned out to support our athletics team who showed great professionalism and team spirit at the New Wave Sports Day on Wednesday. Yet again, we have returned to school holding the New Wave Sports Cup! Thank you also to our families who attended the recent coffee morning regarding well-being and mental health. Your support with these matters is always appreciated.
A huge congratulations to Team Woodberry Down on their fantastic win at the New Wave Sports Day on Wednesday 12th October. The team consisted of 32 talented KS2 sportspeople who completely smashed it on the day!
A well done to all of our pupils who took part and a thank you to Coach Vince and Coach Kieron for their hard work in organising the event.
Thank you to our friends and family at Grazebrook, Shacklewell and Thomas Fairchild primary schools for their competition, effort and friendship on the day. We are delighted to be able to compete in such events and to have the support of other schools in Hackney.
On Tuesday 11th October, we held our first focus coffee morning led by the WAMHS (Wellbeing and Mental Health Support) key worker, Dr.Ellen Presser, around anxiety. We would like to thank all of our parents who attended, who were open to talk and shared within a safe and supportive environment.
Please be reminded that we will be holding a similar session focussing on behaviour management strategies for any families needing support in this area on Tuesday 18th October. Across the year we will also hold further focus sessions led by our experienced wider-support team. As always, if you have a concern around your child, please don't hesitate to let your classteacher, or a member of the Inclusion Team, know.
93.1%
Please remember that school attendance is an essential. Those pupils who attend school regularly are more likely to succeed and are more likely to attend further education.
No holidays are authorised during term time.
Our attendance figure this week rose slightly to 93.1%. A huge well done to class 3D who ended the week with 98% attendance, the highest figure for the week.
Please remember that it is the responsibility of our families to ensure that the children attend school regularly.
If your child is sick, we ask that families report absences by text on 07537455343 in the form of the child's name, class and reason for absence. We appreciate you support with this matter.
We are currently creating a new library space for the children to use as a place to enjoy reading and to find new and exciting books. Our new library will be open to children across the school and will have books for children from Nursery to Year 6.
We have reached out to our PSA, Friends of Woodberry Down for a donation to purchase a wide range of texts for the children to read.
We ask that you have a good look at home for any school books which may be hidden under the bed or down the back of the drawers as we try to fill up our new library. Any donations of unwanted books would be appreciated.
Families of children in Year 6 might be interested to read that they could qualify for a grant to put towards the purchase of their new secondary school uniform. Apply once you have accepted the secondary school transfer offer from Hackney Education.
Eligible applicants can expect to receive their grant prior to the start of term if they apply before 30 June.
The school uniform grant is still available for current Year 7 pupils who have started secondary school from September and meet the eligibility criteria. Information can be found here.
We do have a small number of second hand jumpers that our families are more than welcome to, please ask at the office.
We have a rail at the front of the school where we hang uncollected and unnamed found items.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Thank you to all of our families who made an extra effort to make sure that they purchased the correct uniform for this school year. Please be reminded that:
shoes MUST be plain black school shoes;
trousers or skirts should be grey in colour;
jumpers should have the school logo on them;
no jewellery should be worn to school.
Wearing the logo allows us to feel a sense of pride and belonging. There is a great feeling of teamwork at the school and this is supported by the school's logo and uniform.
With this in mind, we ask that all parents ensure that their children are dressed in the full school uniform each and every day. School uniform can be ordered at yourschooluniform.com.
Please be reminded that when placing orders online, that it can often take up to three weeks for orders to be delivered to your home address.
Year 6 had great fun visiting the Royal Observatory, Greenwich to see the physical representation of the Prime Meridian. The children loved jumping from one hemisphere to the other, whilst reflecting on the significance of timezones. If you have a child in Year 6, ask them to tell you all about their learning and their understanding of the timezones. If you want to help your child, take time to look at the BBC Bitesize website which contains some very useful information.
Year 5 enjoyed visiting the Education Centre at Hampstead Heath in order to consolidate their map reading skills whilst orienteering using maps and compasses. Remember: Naughty Elephants Squirt Water. You may like to take time to look at the BBC Bitesize website about maps with your Year 5 child.
