Woodberry Down Update

Friday 25th November 2022

A Message From Mr Hewie

With the end of November in sight, our thoughts move towards Christmas, the lights, the twinkle and the excitement. I am sure that you are all looking forward to the break, to the joy of spending time with your families and to the cosy darker evenings. With that in mind and with the colder weather forecast for this coming week, I would like to remind everyone to label those hats, scarves and gloves with the children's names and classes. The cost of purchasing items to see us through the winter is becoming ever larger and I am sure that you don't want to lose these things as soon as they have been purchased. If the children misplace items which are clearly labelled, these can be returned easily. Any items which do not have a name on them will be placed in the lost property box in the KS2 playground. You will also have noticed our uncollected items at the front of the school. These items are unlabelled and have been left uncollected from lost property for a considerable time. These items can be taken by our families if they believe that they can put them to good use.

You will be aware that we are set to take two trips to the pantomime over the next weeks. Children in Year 1 & Year 2 will be making their way to Hackney Empire on Wednesday 7th December whilst those children in KS2 will go on Wednesday 14th December. We ask that you please ensure that you have returned your child's permission slip to enable them to take part in the outing. A contribution of £5 per child should be made using ParentPay to enable us to afford such exciting trips in the future.

You will also be aware that our Family Consultation Evening is taking place on Thursday 8th December. A text message will be sent out this week with details of how to arrange a meeting with your child's classteacher. We look forward to seeing you on the evening.

Our PSA, Friends of Woodberry Down have recently sent information to you about the upcoming Christmas Fair on Friday 9th December. If you wish to volunteer to help at the fair, please speak with a member of the office team or with a member of the PSA. PSA volunteers will be selling tickets at the end of the school day in the run up to the event.

In the meantime, thank you for all that you are doing to support the school.

Weekly Attendance

Our attendance figure for the school year to date remains at 93.3%. This remains lower than previous years. A huge well done to class 5W, 4D and 3D who ended this week with 97% attendance, the highest figures for the week!

Please remember that it is the responsibility of our families to ensure that the children attend school regularly. If your child is sick, we ask that families report absences by text on 07537455343 in the form of the child's name, class and reason for absence. We appreciate you support and with this matter. Otherwise, contact us on 0208 800 5758.

School street

We ask that you are reminded that Woodberry Grove is a school street and that no cars should be driven on the road between the hours of 8.00am - 9.00am and again between 3.00pm - 4.00pm. Whilst we recognise that there are exemptions for local residents and blue badge holders, we ask the school community to consider the safety of the children and avoid driving close to the school.

COME LEARN

WITH ME

We are really excited to be welcoming our families into our school over the coming weeks for our ‘Come Learn with Me’ sessions. We hope that many of you will be able to come along to join in with the lessons we have planned. These will take place at 2.30pm, in your child’s classroom on the dates below. Please report to the school reception at 2.30pm on the day, if you wish to join us. The lessons will be linked to your child’s history topic.

These are:

Year 1 - Living History

Year 2 - Hackney's History

Year 3 - Stone Age to Iron Age

Year 4 - The Romans

Year 5 - The Vikings

Year 6 - Benin

DOT DOT FIRE MATHS CHALLENGE

Our Year 6 pupils were lucky enough to take part in a new innovation, combining maths learning with the knowledge and understanding of the current cost of living crisis. Through the launch of the new Dot Dot Fire app, our pupils were able to compete against other schools at the London Stadium, using their knowledge of money and maths to build a greater understanding of how to budget and effectively use money.

Year 4 Come Learn with Me

Year 4 had a fantastic Come Learn with Me last week. Families worked together to make Roman shields, discussing the importance of the Roman Army in the development of the Roman Empire. We will look for more opportunities to invite families into the classroom each term. Don't miss out on the Year 5 Come Learn with Me next Tuesday and the Reception Come Learn with Me on Friday 2nd December!

WINTER FAIR

Our Christmas Fair is taking place on Friday 9th December with tickets on sale at the end of the school day in the run up to the event.

If you are interested in selling your wares at the fair, stalls are available to hire at a cost of £30.00 per table. No food items please.

If you would like to volunteer to help at the fair you would be most welcome. Please contact the organisers of this function Friends of Woodberry Down (FOWD) at the end of the school day.

For more information you can contact them via email on friendsofwd@newwavefederation.co.uk or use the QR code on the flyer.

rose garden workshop

Woodberry Down Learning Council and Eco Champions took part in a workshop supporting the development of the Rose Garden in the Woodberry Down regeneration project. Pupils visited the Rose Garden and considered which aspects of the site they would like to address. Back at school, children created models sharing their suggested improvements. These will be used by the developers when designing the new Rose Garden.
