A Message From Mr Hewie

I am sure that, much like me, you will be glad that it's finally February and that the evenings are beginning to get brighter.  It does however, seem that there are some chillier days ahead and that the halfterm break might be colder than it has been recently.  I know that the children would love to see some snow, so let's keep our fingers crossed.  Please remember to label all of the children's items, including hats, scarves and gloves so that they are less likely to go missing.

Since returning to school in January, we have held a plethora of activities and sessions for our families to join.  It has been a delight to host so many events and to see all of you here at the school.  Thank you for always supporting the school and for all the kind words you offer the staff on a daily basis.  Thank you for joining our Come Dine with Me, Family Fridays, Come Read with Me, Sharing Assemblies and coffee mornings.  We are always glad to have you inside the school and for you to share school life with our children.  I hope that you have found these sessions to be enjoyable, supportive and informative.

There have been trips and visits galore with classes heading out into London nearly every single day.  With Year 1 cruising down the Thames on the London Clipper, Year 3 and Year 4 visiting the Natural History Museum, Year 2 heading to Walthamstow Wetlands, Year 5 going to Lea Valley Ice Centre and Year 6 to the Hackney Junior Citizenship event it has been a very busy few weeks.

The personal development of our children was highlighted as a key strength of our recent OFSTED inspection with the inspectors commenting very positively about this in the recent report.  We are very pleased with the outcome of the recent inspection and have shared the report with all of our families this week.  I hope that you have taken the time to read this.  You can see the full report here.

Already we are nearing the halfterm break.  Thank you to those Year 6 families who have given permission for their children to attend the additional classes on the mornings of the break.  This will further support them in preparation for secondary school.  I wanted to remind you that the school will be closed on Monday 19th February for staff training and that the children are expected to return from the break on Tuesday 20th February.

In the meantime, I hope that you have a great weekend.

School Attendance

Last week, the classes with the best attendance were:

EYFS - Blue Class with 94.3%

KS1 - 2W with 96.7%

KS2 - 4B with 98.2%

As you are aware, it is our ambition to ensure all of our pupils are at school as often as is possible.  We know that those children who attend school regularly achieve better results at the end of Year 6 and therefore enter secondary school at a better advantage.  Children with lower attendance are less likely to leave our school prepared for secondary school because they have missed so much learning.  This is also true of children in Year 1 who take their phonics screening check and have low attendance.  These children are less likely to be able to read or to have an understanding of basic maths and phonics skills.

We ask that you are reminded that, if you submit an application for holidays during the term time, you will be notified that this has not been approved unless circumstances are extraordinary.  We also ask that you support us with absence and provide us with evidence when your child has a medical appointment on a school day.

If your child is unwell, you must contact the school as soon as possible to inform us that they will not attend school on that day.  We appreciate you support and with this matter.  Otherwise, contact us on 0208 800 5758.

ART & Design news from miss williams

This term, our children have really enjoyed getting stuck into their art and D&T projects!

Year 1 students are learning about simple printmaking techniques including doing rubbings of textures, creating oil pastel fish monoprints and making printing platers with clay.

Our Year 2 children are designing and making their own vehicles, including assembling wheel and axle mechanisms.

In Year 6 our children are currently exploring art and activism.  They are designing posters that communicate a message as a way to express their individual voices.

Year 4 Homework projects

Year 4 pupils have been exploring tectonic plates in geography this term, looking at our earth and its layers.  Elina in 4W has created a fantastic model of the layers of the earth using air clay.  Well done Elina for creating such a creative and helpful 3D representation.  Fun fact: did you know the inner core reaches up to temperatures of 6000 degrees!

We are looking forward to seeing the projects from other pupils in the class over the coming days.

Please remember that we expect all homework projects to be brought into school by Wednesday 7th February, before the halfterm break.

HONG KonG Educators visit to woodberry down

On Tuesday 23rd January, we were very fortunate to host a visit from a group of teachers and educators from Hong Kong.  The visitors had come to learn about our innovative ways to enhance our teaching and learning through the use of technology and in particular through the use of iPad.  They were blown away by our school and how the teachers use technology within their lessons as well as by the children's use of iPad in lessons.

The visit gave our children the chance to demonstrate and talk about their learning.  We look forward to hosting more visits like this again in the future.

Year 3 Family assembly

Wow, what an amazing half term it has been for Year 3! As enthusiastic learners who love collaborating, Year 3 worked well to produce an incredible assembly showcasing all their history learning.  We took the parents back to the prehistoric era and through the Stone Age.  From hunter gatherers to farmers, the children were able to describe how the innovation of farming changed life in Britain.  The children continued to describe how life changed through the Bronze Age and how this developed throughout the Iron Age.  The assembly finished with a song all about friendship as in Year 3, we love sharing and growing together.  As Year 3 teachers, we are incredibly proud of the children’s ability to showcase their learning in front of a very large audience.  We would also like to thank all the parents who joined us for the assembly and we hope you learned something new!

English Language Fair

The Mayor of London has committed to make adult education in London more accessible, especially for those who may experience barriers in accessing provision, through an Outreach Programme

As part of this initiative we are bringing together local adult education providers, including Hackney Council and New City College and a number of third sector organisations, for an 'English Language Fair' on Monday 11th March 10am-1pm at The Greenhouse, 244-254 Cambridge Heath Rd, E2 9DA to support local migrant communities, especially those who speak English as a second language, with accessing English classes (ESOL) and other adult education courses.

It is a great opportunity for parents at your school to speak to all the different providers present face to face, find out what courses they offer, ask questions, and take part in taster activities, which will help them make an informed choice about where to study and register their interest for the desired course.

school playground

Although the weather has been milder lately, the forecast for the halfterm break and possibly the weeks beyond that looks set to be colder.  So, we are not waving goodbye to our hats and scarves just yet.  Please make sure that all items are clearly labelled as so many loose gloves and scarves are left in strange places.  Since returning to school in January, the children have been enjoying the activities arranged around the playground at break times and lunch times.  We are very lucky to have a team of dedicated midday meals supervisors and our pupil group, Playground Friends.  Due to their recent science topics and genuine interest, many of the children have been asking about the garden and when the plants will begin to grow.  When you have time, talk to your children about the seasons and life cycles of plants.

Science news from ms onyeanusi

Some fantastic work has been happening across the school in Science this week.  Our year one classes have been building on their knowledge of classifying animals by their characteristics, identifying their own human characteristics.  This will ensure that they are ready to link the different body parts to the correct senses when they cover this soon.

The year 3 have really enjoyed their Science unit learning about rocks. They have had a wonderful time investigating the hardness of different rocks and comparing rocks in several comparative tests. They have also been fascinated to learn how rocks can change over time and looking into how fossils are formed. This then resulted in a terrific opportunity to go to the Natural History Museum and observe a range of rocks and fossils.

Finally the year 5 children have looking at different forces and asking scientific questions around air and water resistance. This meant collaborating in small groups to devise enquiries on how to answer their questions. They were able to draw conclusions as to how the shape of an object can affect the amount of air and water resistance working on an object.

Geography news from Ms Clarke

Why Primary Geography is important.

Primary Geography is not just about memorising maps and continents; it's a dynamic and exciting subject that fosters a deep connection with our planet.   At Woodberry Down, we have carefully created our geography curriculum to introduce young minds to the diverse cultures, ecosystems, and environments across the globe. This knowledge nurtures a sense of global citizenship while promoting empathy and understanding.

An element of the curriculum we consider to be very important is building cultural capital through field trip opportunities. Taking students out of the classroom and into the real world enhances their learning experience. Visits to parks, museums, or local landmarks provide tangible connections to geographical concepts.  At WD, we encourage our pupils to care for and protect the world in which we live. As we face pressing environmental challenges, geography instils a sense of responsibility towards our planet. By understanding the interconnectedness of ecosystems, students are better equipped to contribute to sustainable practices.

As an Apple distinguised school, we embrace the digital age by incorporating interactive maps, virtual tours, and online resources like Google Earth and Digimaps. Technology can make learning geography engaging and accessible.

We encourage our parents and carers to take our children out into the local community to explore and enjoy what our world has to offer!

Mental maths fluency

KS1

In key stage one, a focus remains on the children developing confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. Being confident and familiarising themselves with place value knowledge, addition and subtraction strategies and being able to recall key facts to solve mathematical problems in a range of contexts. To aid the children in being able to doing this, each child has a 'Numbots' account, please ensure your child is practising their maths at home on a daily basis, the website can be found here.

KS2

In key stage two, the children continue to build their fluency of number, alongside the use of mathematical thinking to deepen their knowledge within the units of work they are being taught. Times tables knowledge is the foundation to all maths topics, the children in year 4 continue to prepare for the MTC check, please take time to secure your child’s multiplication understanding here, all key stage two children also have a 'TTRS' account; a fun and engaging way to develop division and multiplication knowledge. Please use the link found here to login into your child’s account.

Year 1 News from miss bowater

This week our Year 1 children have all embarked on exciting trips to the River Thames in the heart of London, a firsthand encounter with some of the human and physical features that we have been learning about in our Geography lessons.  The children set out to observe and identify the iconic human and physical features along the Thames such as Tower Bridge and the London Eye.  They walked from Westminster, passing many famous landmarks, before boarding the Uber Boat by the London Eye to see whether we could recognise further features from the river!

This hands-on experience has undoubtedly enhanced their understanding of geography, fostering a sense of connection to their surroundings.  We look forward to building upon this Geographical knowledge of London next term in our History unit, where we will be learning about the Great Fire of London! Once again, we would like to say a huge thank you to the parent volunteers who accompanied us and made this memorable experience possible.

This term in our mathematics lessons, our Year 1 children have delved into the fascinating concept of time.  We have been learning to read the time with a focus on hour and half hour increments, sequencing events and learning the order of months of the year. Now we have finished this topic, there are a few simple and fun ways you can reinforce their learning at home.

SPRING TERM WELLBEING FROM MISS CURNOW

At Woodberry Down, the wellbeing of our pupils is integral to everything we do. It is woven into the culture of our school, encouraging students to talk about their feelings and emotions as well as ways in which the teachers can support their mental health.

Our Wellbeing Champions are a key part of this. In partnership with Rameen Afiq from the ‘Wellbeing and Mental Health in Schools’ project and myself, we meet with the Wellbeing Champions regularly each term. This is an opportunity for them to develop their skills as leaders in the school as well as work on specific pieces of work.

So far this year the Wellbeing Champions have:

We are excited to continue to work together to promote the importance of mental health and wellbeing over the remainder of the school year.

Next week, Children’s Mental Health Week will take place on 5th-11th February, with the theme being ‘My Voice Matters’. Over the course of the week, students will participate in whole school assemblies and class based activities to raise awareness of this important cause. We look forward to sharing with you the different events that occurred during this time.

Reception news from miss dickinson

We have had a fantastic term so far in Reception. The children have really enjoyed reading our key text "Clean Up" where we have been exploring water pollution, the importance of recycling and learning about the country Jamaica.  The children enjoyed comparing similarities and differences between Jamaica and where we live in the UK.  We were super creative and designed our own beach scenes using water paints and pastels and collage materials. We even got to taste some tropical and exotic fruit! It was delicious.

Reception were also lucky enough to have a recycling workshop from Hackney Council where the children learned about the three types of pollution and the importance of recycling.  We had some brilliant role-play and talk in our very own recycling centre in our playground.  The children have been so engaged sorting the recycling and looking for rubbish around our classrooms.  We also practised clearing the pollution from our small world beach and creating our own junk modelling sea creatures out of recycling! We then explored how water pollution affects animals and spoke about what we can do to help. In our writing lesson, we made posters to put around the school to tell everyone to stop polluting the oceans and to keep our playgrounds clean.  We are so proud of the children's reading and writing progress. The children have since showed great passion and enthusiasm caring for our environment and have become fantastic tidiers! Thank you to all parents who joined us for our Come Learn With Me session and Family Fridays. We love having you in our classrooms.

The children have now begun their new topic "Homes", where we will be exploring homes through history and different kinds of homes.  We have our first trip to the Museum of Home next week where we will be comparing homes from the past and how they have changed. We can't wait!
