Message from Mrs Beecroft

Dear Grazebrook Families

This week we are focusing on the values of kindness and collaboration to show our commitment to and support of Anti-Bullying Week. This year's theme is 'Make a Noise about Bullying', with a focus on teaching children how to avoid being a bystander to unkindness and bullying. Helpful guidance for families from the anti-bullying alliance can be found here.

We have started the week by wearing odd socks to school to show that we are all special and unique. If your child forgot their odd socks today, they can wear them any day this week if they wish! Tomorrow, we will be visited by Konflux Theatre who will work with our PSHE and Wellbeing Pupil Ambassadors to create a play about kindness, which will be showcased to KS2 pupils at the end of the day.

On Friday, children may come to school in their own clothes and, if possible, make a donation (of whatever you can afford) to Children in Need. The theme this year is 'spot...acular', so children may wish to wear something spotty to support the charity. Further information about Children in Need can be found here

This week also sees the arrival of the Travelling Book Fair to Grazebrook. This will be open for browsing and buying on Wednesday 15th, Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of November from 8.00am–9.15am and 3.30pm–4.00pm each day either in our Main Hall or in the Key Stage 2 Corridor.  The book cases will also be available if you are collecting your child from Our Space on Thursday and Friday. There will be over 200 titles on sale with prices starting at £2.99. Every book you buy provides the school with free books for our classroom libraries, so we thank you very much for your support.

Finally, many of you have asked about our recent visit from Ofsted and when you will find out the outcome. Ofsted reports are generally shared with schools four to five weeks after the inspection. Once we have our final report, we will upload it to our website and share it with you.

Learning across the curriculum

As part of our History curriculum, Year 6 have been learning about Benin. The Kingdom of Benin was founded as early as the 10th century CE when the Edo people settled in the rainforests of West Africa. As an entry point lesson, Year 6 studied images of artefacts from the Kingdom of Benin. Then, they sketched a design for their own replica Benin bronze. Using air-drying clay, the children collaborated with their families and peers to create ambitious pieces during the Y6 Come Learn With Me.

Reception have been busy developing their geography skills by drawing and labelling maps of their journey to school inspired by the book The Queen's Hat by Steve Antony.

Nursery have been working together to develop their amazing woodland area. The children planted some new plants that like shady areas, including a little tree and some violas. They also went on a leaf hunt as part of their Autumn topic. Afterwards, the children sorted their leaves into groups and counted them. The children have also been very focused while practising their pencil grip and writing their names.

In Science, Year 2 have been learning about different animal habitats. During their Come Learn with Me, the children were very creative, working with their families to design and make a habitat for their chosen animals.

The Year 1 children have been very inspired by their class book, A Snail and a Whale by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. At their Come Learn With Me, they made their own characters to retell this fantastic story of adventure and friendship.

Inspired by their History topic of the Vikings, Year 5 have been creating these amazing home learning projects. Well done to Agnes, Yasmine, Demarni, Arin, Alessandro, Phoebe and Hivay for their incredible helmets, shields, long boats and fact files.

Hackney Foodbank

Hackney Foodbank is an independent charity which runs in partnership with local organisations, businesses and churches, and helps stop local people in crisis going hungry. With the festive season approaching, we would like to show our support for this amazing charity by collecting items for it.

We are asking any families who can to donate one item of non-perishable food to our collection. Children can give their donation to their class teacher or drop it off at the school office. Hackney Foodbank has published a list of items it is most desperate for on its website here (or see the images below) but we are happy to accept any donation and/or festive treats too! We will be collecting donations until Friday 24th November, when we will be delivering them to the Foodbank in time for the run up to Christmas.

A Message from Grazebrook PSA

The Grazebrook PSA Committee would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Grazebrook PSA community for your valuable contributions in making our 2023 Grazebrook Halloween Fright Night a successful event. Great fun was had, and we could not have done it without all your donations and the effort put in by all our lovely volunteers.

The total profit generated from the event was in excess of £1,500. With these funds, we will continue to fund academic and enrichment activities such as the upcoming Christmas pantomimes.

Our next GB PSA event is the GB Winter Fair, which is scheduled for Saturday 9 December. In the run up to the event, we will be requiring various donations and volunteers once again.

Please join us for our first GB Winter Fair planning meeting next Friday 17 November in the GB staff meeting room at 9am. We will also be reaching out to the GB PSA community in due course to recruit the required volunteers. Please do volunteer if you can. Every child, parent and carer of GB is a member of the GB PSA community, and your help is very much appreciated to make our events a success.

Finally, we are currently urgently recruiting for a temporary Comms person to assist us with the preparation of the publicity for the GB Winter Fair (including flyers, posters and tickets) and managing the communication between the GB PSA Committee and the GB PSA community. Please reach out at grazebrookpsa@gmail.com if you are interested in helping. We are waiting for you!
