Grazebrook Primary School Bulletin
21st October 2024
21st October 2024
As the nights draw in and the weather has taken a turn towards the autumnal, it is time to reflect on the success of the past half term. The children have gained a wealth of new knowledge and shared experiences. Whether going on a trip with their class, learning a new instrument or getting creative with their families, they have been fantastic role models of all our Grazebrook values.
Highlights this week include our Year 2 Come Dine With Me on Wednesday at 12pm; Nursery, Reception and Year 3 Come Learn With Me events on Thursday at 9am; the Year 5 Reading Breakfast at 8.30am on Friday and our Year 6 Learning Celebration Assembly at 10am on Friday. Year 4 will also be completing their geography fieldwork at Alexandra Palace on Wednesday as the grand finale to their 'Map It!' topic. The main event of the week for many of our children however, is our non-uniform, Halloween PSA fundraiser on Friday - details of which can be found below.
At the end of this week, the classes sections of our website will be updated with new information about your child's Autumn 2 learning for you to take a look at over the half term if you so wish. Links to key documents and year group specific information will be shared with you in the Autumn 2 curriculum letters. The key dates for Autumn 2 shared below will also be added to the website and MCAS calendars.
A reminder that we finish at the usual time of 3.30pm on Friday with Our Space and EYFS Wraparound Care finishing at 6.00pm.
Wishing you all a fantastic half term and looking forward to seeing you back at school at 8.55am on Monday 4th November.

For their Come Learn With Me, the Year 4 children used their best crafting skills to represent their knowledge of the properties of solids, liquids and gases. Year 6 continued the scientific theme by celebrating World Space Week. They created their own solar systems including some very glittery stars! Year 1 chose to celebrate their class book, The Lion Inside by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, by creating collages of their favourite character - the lion. We were really impressed by the children's cutting and sticking skills as well as their storytelling afterwards.
A special mention to two of our Year 6 parents, Flo and Henrietta, for running weekly netball sessions before school. We really appreciate your dedication and we know the children who have attended have absolutely loved it!
On Friday, we were extremely excited to have some very special guests at Grazebrook. Nursery, Year 1, Year 2 and a selection of KS2 pupils were thrilled to meet a wide range of animals including a skunk, meerkats, a giant snail and a snake. The children showed incredible focus when learning about the animals and were very kind to them, stroking them gently and not making too much noise. The children will use this experience to develop their scientific understanding of the features of different animals and their habitats.
Many thanks to the families of Grazebrook for funding this fantastic day by holding bake sales earlier in the year.
A huge well done to Adrian in Year 4 who was voted the winner of the Happy Card project as part of Thinking of You Week.
Adrian's design has now been turned into a card and will shortly be on sale from Early Bird Designs. Profits from the sale of his card will go to the charity, Kids, which supports children with disabilities. The charity was chosen by Adrian as he wanted to help other children in his community.
This year, we would love for the children of Grazebrook to submit entries into the BBC 500 Words Story Writing Competition. The competition is open to any child aged 5 to 11. Children should write a story that they would love to read themselves. They need to be as creative as possible - their story could make the judges laugh, cry or just be blown away by what they are reading. Here are the competition rules:
All the stories must:
Be 500 words or less (the title is not included in the number)
Be written by one child and not a group of children
Be the child's own original idea
Be prose, not a rap or poem
Stories must not:
Give any personal details of the child, including their name
Recount an historical event (but they can use a real person or historical character as a source of inspiration)
Be created, written or developed by AI
All stories will be judged on the following criteria:
Characterisation
Plot
Originality
Language
Enjoyment
The 50 finalists will be invited to the grand final at Buckingham Palace in February next year, where the bronze, silver and gold winners in each category will have their stories read out by celebrities. Each finalist will win books and the gold winners will receive 500 books for their school! The winning stories will receive an original illustration from Dapo Adeola, Nigel Parkinson, Lydia Monks, Momoko Abe, Rob Biddulph or Yasmeen Ismail.
Stories can be handwritten or typed. Finished stories should be handed to your child's class teacher by Tuesday 5th of November with their full name and age included at the end of the story. The school will then upload the stories submitted onto the competition website.
Good Luck Grazebrook!
We are pleased to announce that this year, Grazebrook is taking part in the Hackney Reading Champions programme. Last week, representatives from Year 6 attended the launch meeting alongside other children from schools across Hackney. Their role is to continue to promote a love of reading at Grazebrook and lead a wider team of Reading Ambassadors from different year groups so that all children are motivated to read and are able to identify authors and types of books that they like reading.
The Reading Champions and Ambassadors will also provide a key role in giving feedback to their class teachers and the school leadership team around our reading curriculum and the books on offer in school.
Details of other pupil responsibilities and pupil groups will be shared with you in each Bulletin.
This Friday, 25th October, the PSA are hosting a Halloween themed Non-Uniform day!
Children can come to school in their spookiest costumes (or non-spooky clothes if they would prefer).
It’s all for a good cause: raising money for Anti-Bullying Week and school sports equipment.
Donating is easy:
- By cash or card on the day
- Online, at https://tinyurl.com/yatewhb7
There will also be a Halloween themed treat and bake sale after school from 3.30pm in the Key Stage 2 playground. Donations of baked goods can be dropped off at the school office during the day on Friday.
A huge thank you from Team Grazebrook to all our families for your support.
We are looking for a member of our school community who is passionate about supporting us to take climate action as part of the Climate Ambassadors project. The project is funded by the Department for Education as part of its Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy.
The role of a Climate Ambassador is to provide dedicated support to our school to develop and deliver an impactful climate action plan. You will signpost our Sustainability Lead to resources, organisations and funding to implement the plan.
We are looking for an individual who is experienced in supporting communities to take action. You don't need to have a background in climate or sustainability: only the enthusiasm and people skills needed to bring the Grazebrook children and staff along on our climate action journey.
Volunteers are asked to commit to 15 hours of support over a five-month period. This includes three hours of bespoke training provided by the UCL Climate Action Unit.
If you believe you might be the right person for the job, please email gboffice@newwavefederation.co.uk with the email header, 'Climate Ambassador Expression of Interest'.
Thank you in advance for your support.
If you have any queries regarding your child's learning, the first point of contact is your child's class teacher. You can speak to them at the end of the day or contact our school office to arrange a phone call or face-to-face meeting. At times, you may wish to contact the member of staff in charge of your child's year group. At Grazebrook, these are:
Nursery and Reception: Ms Kelly O'Callaghan (EYFS Leader)
Year 1 and Year 2: Ms Caireann Conlon (Assistant Headteacher)
Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6: Ms Simone Bunbury (Deputy Headteacher)
SENCo: Ms Caireann Conlon
All email queries, including those for the attention of a class teacher or school leader, should be sent to gboffice@newwavefederation.co.uk in the first instance with the addressee and/or topic in the subject line. These will be forwarded to the relevant member of staff.
