Dear Grazebrook Families
As we approach the midpoint of this half term, I would like to take a moment to celebrate the fantastic start we’ve had! It has been a joy to see the dedication and enthusiasm from the children and staff and the progress made so far is something to be proud of.
Some of the highlights of the term have been our Year 5's starting their Cycle Confident training which has included cycling around the local area with their instructors; Year 4 taking part in Tree of Life workshops to celebrate their uniqueness and develop their confidence; assemblies from Hackney Food Bank and our own Reading Champions; as well as the first of our family events where Key Stage 1 children made fantastic use of their geographical and mathematical knowledge with their parents and carers.
Last week, our English Hub hosted an Early Language Conference for educators from schools across London and beyond. The visitors were able to visit our Nursery and Reception classes to observe the way we ignite children's curiosity and develop their language through interactions. Our visitors were incredibly impressed with how confident, engaged and imaginative all the children were.
Thank you for your continued support with ensuring your child comes to school in correct school uniform every day. A reminder to label EVERYTHING with your child's name please as we have a large number of unnamed items in our lost property boxes, especially hats, scarves, gloves and water bottles.
To those who are celebrating this week, we hope you have a wonderful Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year!
Come Dine With Me should now be booked through your MCAS (My Child At School) account.

I’m Alex Stockbridge and I joined the wonderful team at Grazebrook this term. I am excited to work at Grazebrook because the whole staff team is committed to providing an inclusive environment where every child can thrive. As the Assistant Headteacher and SENDCO, I work closely with teachers, parents and external professionals to support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
I have extensive experience in supporting children with a wide range of needs. You are encouraged to contact me if:
you feel that your child would benefit from learning, social or emotional additional support or assessments;
you have concerns about your child's mental health or wellbeing;
you are unsure about the SEND process or require guidance.
You can get in touch with me by calling the school office on 020 8802 4051 or by emailing gboffice@newwavefederation.co.uk
Nursery children have been exploring winter. They practised drawing circles before painting and printing beautiful snowy trees.
Reception have been learning about the importance of being responsible through reusing and recycling paper, card, metal and plastic. They learnt about the impact of water pollution on sea animals and made posters to persuade people to put their litter in the bin. They also tidied up their own learning garden.
Year 1 have been reading I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. First, they acted out the story before retelling it. They then imagined they were the bear and wrote to the rabbit to find out why he took their hat. Ms Cole and Ms Agyeman were really impressed by the children's use of questions marks and being able to edit and improve their writing.
The children have also been enjoying giving instructions to their Bee-Bots in their computing lessons. They worked in pairs with one child closing their eyes and guessing the commands that their partner had inputted after observing their Bee-Bot move.
In their Come Learn With Me, the children absolutely loved making their own visual time table including analogue clocks which they have been using to tell the time in their maths lessons.
Year 2 were inspired by the book Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett to create a desert home for the story's main character, Sunny. They drew on both their scientific knowledge of habitats and their new geographic knowledge of deserts in Egypt to create their collaged landscapes. Many thanks to all the families who came along and got creative with 2G and 2B.
In their geography lessons, Year 3 have been learning about different types of settlements including hamlets, villages, towns and cities. They have been out and about in the local area conducting geography fieldwork to identify features of their local area in order to compare them to other areas of the United Kingdom.
In science, Year 4 have been investigating sound. They made predictions of how loud each instrument would be before testing out their theories and creating a bar chart on their iPads to share and compare their results.
Year 4 have also been celebrating mistakes in their PSHE lessons by creating mindset mindmaps. The children identified why mistakes are good including that you can learn from them; you can become more confident because you can identify what you have done wrong and fix it; you learn that you can solve your own problems and build resilience.
In Design and Technology lessons, the children have been exploring simple pneumatic systems made from bottles, tubes and balloons. Later this half term, they will use their systems to make moving models.
Year 5 really enjoyed their recent fire safety workshops. They were eager to play the role of detective during ‘Fire Cluedo’ and were interested to learn about the top 5 causes of fires and what to do in the case of a fire.
Last week saw the first round of our annual bikeability training for our Year 5s. Bikeability cycle training (under the guidance of Cycle Confident) provides children with a variety of sessions from learning to ride, to confidence boosting sessions in the school playground to advanced, on-road cycling around local roads. Bikes are provided by Cycle Confident for children without their own allowing all children to enjoy and develop their skills together.
Message from Ms McLaughlin:
Our Reading Champions have been working hard to get Grazebrook reading! They have delivered whole-school assemblies as well as visited classrooms. They have shared their favourite storybook and chapter book recommendations to inspire others. They are also hosting daily playtime and lunchtime reading clubs, giving children the chance to relax and dive into a good book outside each day.
Message from Mrs Cabey:
The eco-councillors have been very busy identifying ways in which Grazebrook can look after their world. Energy Sparkx visited in December and provided the children with an opportunity to go around the school with a thermal camera to identify where energy is being lost and actions that can be put into place to avoid this.
The team have persuaded teachers to reduce printing by sharing resources digitally, on google classroom and through airplay from their iPad. They are campaigning to reduce single use plastic including yogurt pots and are encouraging children to ensure they have a reusable water bottle as well as switch off screen and lights that are accidentally left on during break and lunchtimes.
After a meeting with Hackney Food Bank, the children were also inspired to organise their own foodbank to reduce food waste and help tackle food poverty.
Citizens Advice Hackney will be back at Grazebrook once a fortnight from Thursday 30th January. They are able to provide free, confidential and independent advice to Grazebrook parents/carers on: immigration, charity applications, form filling, energy, cost of living, employment, money/debts, welfare benefits including Universal Credit, family matters and housing.
To talk to a member of the Citizens Advice team over the phone or book a face-to-face session at the school, leave a voicemail on 020 3880 2266 stating that you are a Grazebrook parent/carer seeking advice. If you require any further information or would prefer to book via the school, please contact Ms Sealy (Pam) via our school office.
If you have any queries regarding your child's learning, the first point of contact is your child's class teacher. You can speak to them at the end of the day or contact our school office to arrange a phone call or face-to-face meeting. At times, you may wish to contact the member of staff in charge of your child's year group. At Grazebrook, these are:
Nursery and Reception: Ms Kelly O'Callaghan (EYFS Leader)
Year 1 and Year 2 and SENCo: Ms Alex Stockbridge (Assistant Headteacher)
Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6: Ms Simone Bunbury (Deputy Headteacher)
All email queries, including those for the attention of a class teacher or school leader, should be sent to gboffice@newwavefederation.co.uk in the first instance with the addressee and/or topic in the subject line. These will be forwarded to the relevant member of staff.
